{"id":51691,"date":"2024-02-26T15:23:39","date_gmt":"2024-02-26T15:23:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=51691"},"modified":"2024-02-26T15:23:41","modified_gmt":"2024-02-26T15:23:41","slug":"doncaster-sheffield-airport-controversy-continues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/02\/26\/doncaster-sheffield-airport-controversy-continues\/","title":{"rendered":"Cross-party squabbling over Doncaster Sheffield Airport continues"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Conservative MP for Don Valley Nick Fletcher came under fire from mayor Ros Jones last week for claiming that Doncaster Sheffield Airport was closed by the council.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The comments, made in a recent campaign leaflet, follow the news that the airport could reopen as part of a \u00a3138 million 10-year plan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents in the Don Valley constituency said last week that they recently received a campaign leaflet from Mr Fletcher which read: \u201cNick is continuing the campaign to re-open Doncaster Sheffield Airport, challenging the Council\u2019s decision to close it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement was met with fierce criticism on X, with Mayor of Doncaster, Labour&#8217;s Ros Jones, describing the claim as \u201ca complete and utter lie&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Doncaster Tory MP Nick Fletcher bleats on about misinformation and then puts out a leaflet with a blatant lie in it. Everyone knows Doncaster Council didn&#39;t close the airport. Absolutely desperate from a man and party trying to cling onto power. Lies. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/R5t6qBolli\">pic.twitter.com\/R5t6qBolli<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Darren Burke (@DarrenBurkeSYN) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DarrenBurkeSYN\/status\/1758495087456141467?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 16, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have written to Nick Fletcher in relation to misinformation,\u201d Ms Jones wrote on X. &#8220;I expect him to retract this statement and apologise to constituents.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Built on the former RAF base in Finningley, the airport closed in 2022 after owners Peel Group deemed the site <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-south-yorkshire-62441447\">\u201cno longer commercially viable\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interparty squabbling over the airport&#8217;s uncertain future is frustrating businesses in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are blessed to have strong supporters in Nick Fletcher and Ros Jones in helping push for the airport\u2019s reopening,\u201d said Craig Dowie, managing director of the Crown Hotel in Bawtry. \u201cBut the bickering is overshadowing the objective of getting it open.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doncaster Sheffield Airport was opened in April 2005 and was known as Robin Hood Airport until 2016. It served nearly 1.5m passengers in 2019 and housed the <a href=\"https:\/\/vulcantothesky.org\/news\/vulcan-xh558-set-to-leave-doncaster-sheffield-airport-in-2023\/\">last airworthy Vulcan bomber<\/a> in Great Britain for over 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last passenger flights flew from the airport in November 2022, but the Sheffield Wire reported <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/02\/19\/doncaster-sheffield-airport-faces-divisive-reopening\/\">last week <\/a>that \u00a3138m is to be invested by the South Yorkshire Combined Mayoral Authority to help reopen it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Blatant lie from Don Valley MP<br>A claim by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NickFletcherMP?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NickFletcherMP<\/a> that it was \u201cthe council\u2019s decision to close\u201d Doncaster Sheffield Airport, is a complete and utter lie! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MyDoncaster?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@myDoncaster<\/a> had nothing to do with the closure of our airport, quite the opposite in fact. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Dh4MgyO1ik\">pic.twitter.com\/Dh4MgyO1ik<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Ros Jones &#8211; Mayor of Doncaster (@MayorRos) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MayorRos\/status\/1759631004447187376?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 19, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, Mr Fletcher published a series of Facebook posts in order to &#8216;get to the facts&#8217; of what happened to the defunct airport.
