{"id":51507,"date":"2024-02-26T11:57:04","date_gmt":"2024-02-26T11:57:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=51507"},"modified":"2024-02-26T12:18:55","modified_gmt":"2024-02-26T12:18:55","slug":"donny-delight-as-local-radio-show-celebrates-going-viral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/02\/26\/donny-delight-as-local-radio-show-celebrates-going-viral\/","title":{"rendered":"Donny delight as local radio show celebrates going viral"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The UK\u2019s oldest football phone-in show paid homage to a viral phone call on Friday after broadcasting live from a Doncaster pub.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Salutation, on South Parade in the city centre, played host to BBC Radio Sheffield and sports fans from across the region as its <em>Football Heaven <\/em>show came live from the pub\u2019s beer garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It followed a call to <em>Praise or Grumble<\/em> \u2013 the show\u2019s fan phone-in <a href=\"https:\/\/barnsleyjournalism.wixsite.com\/vibemedia\/post\/praise-or-grumble-the-original\">since 1986<\/a> \u2013 on 3 February after Doncaster Rovers\u2019 draw against Sutton United, which host Rob Staton described as \u201cthe weirdest call I\u2019ve ever had,\u201d in 14 years of hosting the show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the 90-second call, a Rovers fan known only as \u2018Paul\u2019 addressed many issues before abruptly signing off by saying: \u201cI\u2019m off to Sal for a pint. See you later mate,\u201d leaving Mr Staton and listeners bewildered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A clip of the call later went viral on X \u2013 gathering more than 800,000 views over multiple posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Paul\u2019s call to Praise or Grumble got people talking on Saturday evening\u2026 \ud83e\udd23<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/DRFC?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#DRFC<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BBCSheffield?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BBCSheffield<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fyWQS9Fely\">pic.twitter.com\/fyWQS9Fely<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Football Heaven (@footballheaven) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/footballheaven\/status\/1754548425582866836?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 5, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHundreds of thousands of people had watched this clip by Sunday morning,\u201d said Mr Staton, 39. \u201cIt really struck a chord with a lot of people so we wanted to celebrate that, get to Doncaster and visit the Sal!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The show featured interviews with notable Rovers fans. This included Paul Mayfield, also known as \u2018Mr Doncaster Rovers\u2019, and the Rambling Rovers fan group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Praise or Grumble<\/em> has always been a show involving raw emotions\u201d, said Ainsley Cooper, the groups\u2019 social media manager. \u201cAs soon as I heard the tagline, I knew it was going to catch on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Co-founder Liam Dale agreed, saying: \u201cCalls like this unite the fanbase. There\u2019s been a lot of negativity in the last few weeks and years so that positive uplift is really good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_4675-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-51531\" style=\"width:705px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rovers fan Paul Mayfield, affectionately known as &#8216;Mr Doncaster Rovers&#8217; and pictured here with his iconic gnome, was one of many guests to appear on the show.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Many fans claim Rovers\u2019 upturn in form since the call is no coincidence. A 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon on Saturday extended their unbeaten run to five games. Winger Luke Molyneux referenced the call on X after their <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/02\/19\/grimsby-town-vs-doncaster-rovers-goals-across-the-board-for-five-star-rovers-in-5-1-hammering\/\">5-1 thrashing of Grimsby Town <\/a>last weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018The Sal\u2019 has always been a popular pub among Rovers fans. According to historian John Coyle, it is possible the founding members toasted their new club there in 1879. Plus, when playing at nearby Bennetthorpe in the early 1920s, players changed there before games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRadio Sheffield has a special bond with fans,\u201d said Mr Staton. \u201cWe cover six football clubs so it\u2019s great to have a Doncaster-centric show and be part of the broader region.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Football Heaven<\/em> broadcasts every weekday on BBC Radio Sheffield between 6pm and 7pm.
