In a video clip <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejc.com\/news\/leeds-university-chaplain-accused-of-war-crimes-for-volunteering-for-idf-kpvvpv5e?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Daily%20Email%2013112023&amp;utm_content=Daily%20Email%2013112023+CID_27646c8351448e9c1f4a82069c826d35&amp;utm_source=Email%20marketing%20software&amp;utm_term=Leeds%20uni%20chaplain%20accused%20of%20war%20crimes%20for%20volunteering%20for%20IDF\">leaked to the Jewish Chronicle<\/a>, Rabbi Deutsch said: \u201cWhat Israel is trying to do is to destroy the evil which is the most moral thing possible. We are also trying to deal with the civilians in Gaza in the best way possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Protesters at University of Sheffield demand the removal of a chaplain who served in Gaza\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PHXIti2q9kE?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One female student, who did not want to be named, said in a speech at the protest: \u201cWhilst our fellow students find themselves stuck at Rafah, stuck in nylon tents, stuck between life and death, Zecharia Deutsch is able to come and go as he pleases.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around a hundred activists arrived for a protest on campus with banners at midday on Wednesday, 14 February. Several guards were stationed around the University\u2019s Belief, No Belief, and Religious Life Centre, where the university&#8217;s chaplains are based. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHow can students watching their homes be bombed from afar think that they would feel safe going to the chaplaincy for support?\u201d said Dr Lisa Stampnitzky, a Lecturer in Politics at the University, during the protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"936\" height=\"528\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Picture1-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50941\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Picture1-1.png 936w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Picture1-1-480x271.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 936px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Activists at the protest on 14 February<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This university has a government mandated duty under the Prevent legislation to prevent students from being drawn into violent religious extremism.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Deutsch is primarily a chaplain at the University of Leeds but also serves as an associate chaplain at several Yorkshire universities, including the University of Sheffield. He is not employed by the University of Sheffield, but by the organisation University Jewish Chaplaincy (UJC). After returning to the UK from fighting in Gaza and receiving threats, police advised him, along with his family, to go into hiding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, protesters sent a letter signed by over 11,000 students, staff, and community members asking the university to stop employing Zecharia Deutsch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University of Sheffield responded to a request for comment: &#8220;The University of Sheffield\u2019s Belief, No Belief and Religious Life Centre includes a diverse team of chaplains from different faiths and perspectives.
