{"id":50046,"date":"2024-02-19T09:35:52","date_gmt":"2024-02-19T09:35:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=50046"},"modified":"2024-02-19T10:59:17","modified_gmt":"2024-02-19T10:59:17","slug":"sheffields-steelkings-are-raising-money-for-life-changing-opportunity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/02\/19\/sheffields-steelkings-are-raising-money-for-life-changing-opportunity\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield&#8217;s Steelkings are raising money for life-changing opportunity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>A Sheffield Para ice hockey club is relying on \u201ccrucial\u201d donations to send some of their members to Norway for a global championship.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sheffield Steelkings are hoping to raise \u00a32,000 for their players to be able to represent Great Britain in the 2024 World Para Ice Hockey Championships B-Pool.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The club is fully self-funded and relies on crucial charity work and fundraisers to be able to provide this opportunity for the team. When asked what going to Norway means to him, one of the members, Paul Brown, 33, said: \u201cFor your family to watch you on telly [&#8230;] it\u2019s a massive sense of achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf it wasn\u2019t for people\u2019s donations, we\u2019d never be able to represent the country.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Brown joined the Steelkings around a year ago after having one of his legs amputated. He said: \u201cThe club as a whole is one of the best things I\u2019ve been involved with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRather than being a club, we are like one big family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/FB_IMG_1703112088133-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50048\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/FB_IMG_1703112088133-980x652.jpg 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/FB_IMG_1703112088133-480x319.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Paul Brown playing Para ice hockey. Credit: Paul Brown.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The club, which was founded in 2014, provides a space for those of all ages with disabilities to get involved in contact sports. Alongside the physical benefits of the game, the club also has a focus on creating a supportive community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team regularly go out for meals and always finds the time to help each other. Mr Brown credits the club with aiding him throughout his recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cWithout that club, I don\u2019t know where I\u2019d be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The club has not only had an impact on its players but also on children in the local community.
