It destroys biodiversity, increases flood risk and reduces air quality.<br><br>I&#39;m calling on the Government to ban moorland burning. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/v44o8KWFQz\">pic.twitter.com\/v44o8KWFQz<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Tom Hunt (@tomhunt100) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomhunt100\/status\/1732774380025852127?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 7, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On 9 October, wealthy owners of two moorland estates, Moscar and Strines, sent Sheffield air pollution levels soaring <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BerzinsBob\/status\/1712499028380831822\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">four<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WildSheffield\/status\/1711393696451551273\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eight<\/a> times over the<a href=\"https:\/\/uk-air.defra.gov.uk\/air-pollution\/uk-eu-limits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> UK legal limits<\/a> after they set fire to their moors. The fires are set by gamekeepers to stimulate the growth of new heather shoots, which grouse like to eat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Grouse moors have demonstrated utter disregard for communities in Sheffield,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wildmoorsuk\/status\/1732701457755849160\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildmoors.org.uk\/who-we-are\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wild Moors<\/a>, a group dedicated to protecting the moors. In addition to causing air pollution, grouse moor burning also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn-uk-peatlandprogramme.org\/about-peatlands\/peatland-damage\/burning-peatlands\">damages the environment<\/a> and makes flooding worse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Moorland Association, which represents the owners of the grouse moors, said: &#8220;In October smoke from controlled burns on moors close to Sheffield did regrettably cause an issue for local residents.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A lot of anger from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Sheffield?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Sheffield<\/a> residents about appalling moorland burning right next to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WildSheffield?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@WildSheffield<\/a> nature reserve.<br><br>Suburbs of Crosspool, Hillsborough and more full of health damaging smoke. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/OG8cGQ6obf\">pic.twitter.com\/OG8cGQ6obf<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Bob Berzins (@BerzinsBob) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BerzinsBob\/status\/1711368079505007091?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 9, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In<a href=\"https:\/\/sheffnews.com\/news\/sheffield-city-council-leader-calls-for-moorland-burning-ban\"> a letter<\/a> to Steve Barclay MP, Secretary of State for the Environment, Councillor Hunt wrote: \u201cWe all know that air pollution kills and that air pollution from fires has an immediate impact on hospital admissions and A&amp;E attendances. The burning of heather, simply speaking, makes it harder for Sheffield to achieve its air quality improvement ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I hope you will take action to end this destructive practice and to put pressure on landowners to put an immediate end to it this season.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Air pollution from burning peatlands<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/content\/pdf\/10.1186\/s12940-016-0093-4.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> is much more toxic than pollution from cars<\/a>. Research has found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/sep\/04\/what-is-californias-wildfire-smoke-doing-to-our-health-scientists-paint-a-bleak-picture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">only an hour of wildfire smoke exposure<\/a> can lead to increases in ambulance calls. When the smoke drifted across the Sheffield, residents reported<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SparkiOne\/status\/1711480605647466824\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> asthma attacks<\/a> and difficulty breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Councillor Hunt called on Defra to stop the practice, he said the City Council &#8220;has limited to no powers to compel landowners to behave responsibly.&#8221;<br><br>At least one council member disagreed. Green Party\u00a0City Ward Councillor Douglas Johnson said. &#8220;I think it was disappointing to focus on what the council can&#8217;t do instead of what it can.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bob Berzins, a long-time moorland campaigner, also disagreed. He said: &#8220;Sheffield Council does have powers to issue a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/statutory-nuisances-how-councils-deal-with-complaints\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">smoke abatement notice<\/a> against the moor owners and I&#8217;m asking Tom Hunt to do everything he can to ensure this happens.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councillor Hunt\u2019s letter comes after efforts from South Yorkshire Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.co.uk\/business\/south-yorkshire-mayor-seeks-meeting-with-duke-over-smoke-sheffield-4394014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oliver Coppard<\/a> and Sheffield Hallam MP <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/_OliviaBlake\/status\/1715038029667082379\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Olivia Blake<\/a> to prevent future burns.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sheffield City Council Leader Tom Hunt has written a letter calling on Defra to stop the &#8220;destructive practice\u201d of grouse moor burning, which caused a huge pall of toxic smoke to blanket Sheffield this autumn.
