Source: Ian J France.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While the extent of health benefits associated with cold water swimming is still debated, there are multiple studies that suggest it may improve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhf.org.uk\/informationsupport\/heart-matters-magazine\/activity\/cold-water-swimming\">cardiovascular<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.port.ac.uk\/news-events-and-blogs\/blogs\/health-and-wellbeing\/cold-water-therapy-what-are-the-benefits-and-dangers-of-ice-baths-wild-swimming-and-freezing-showers\">mental health<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it doesn\u2019t come without risks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inland water temperatures can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outdoorswimmingsociety.com\/cold-water-feels-temperature-guide\/#:~:text=In%20the%20UK%2C%20inland%20waters,safely%20stay%20in%20the%20water.\">fall to as low as 0 degrees <\/a>in UK wintertime, which can affect how long a person can stay submerged and how the body will react.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-139c44e0-2c21-4914-beb6-236c7c4e4fa1\">Sophie Kirkton, 41, a cold water swimming instructor and breathwork coach, has been practising cold water immersion for 15 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-e10bc151-bdca-4caa-a716-1cafab72d615\">She first discovered its benefits when training for a channel relay swim. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-e10bc151-bdca-4caa-a716-1cafab72d615\">Ms Kirkton said: &#8220;I started to notice that I felt amazing, I had more energy, I felt calmer, I felt happier, I felt more regulated and I noticed I wasn\u2019t getting ill. I felt great.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-440aebd0-5783-478d-9bf0-936d01480dd6\">Ms Kirkton runs a monthly cold water swimming workshop in conjunction with the Forest School in Oughtibridge where she teaches people how to submerge themselves safely and breathing techniques to deal with cold water shock and alleviate stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul Harries, 45, social worker, has been swimming outdoors for four months after hearing about the mental health benefits associated with the activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: &#8220;I make sure I get into the water really slowly so I can slow my breathing down before I start swimming. You shouldn\u2019t be jumping straight into cold water because you can get cold water shock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When you go under the water, it\u2019s like all your senses shut off, and it\u2019s dark and cold.
