{"id":48667,"date":"2023-12-01T16:19:54","date_gmt":"2023-12-01T16:19:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=48667"},"modified":"2023-12-01T16:19:55","modified_gmt":"2023-12-01T16:19:55","slug":"blades-legend-jagielka-finally-calls-time-on-stellar-career-for-club-and-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/12\/01\/blades-legend-jagielka-finally-calls-time-on-stellar-career-for-club-and-country\/","title":{"rendered":"Blades legend Jagielka finally calls time on stellar career for club and country"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sheffield United legend Phil Jagielka has announced his retirement from football this week at the age of 41 following a 23-year career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jagielka joined United\u2019s youth academy aged 15 and made his first-team debut in 2000, playing for the Blades over 300 times and going on to represent England at a World Cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The centre-back\u2019s United career was defined by his unerring dependability in defence and several iconic moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jagielka said on Instagram: \u201cNever in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would ever get to play football at the highest level for some amazing clubs as well as my country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The defender was an ever-present for the 2000s Blades side that achieved promotion to the Premier League, making 133 consecutive league appearances between 2004 and 2007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Jags\u2019 scored the decisive goal in United\u2019s first top-flight win in 12 years against Middlesbrough in 2006, and even made an emergency appearance as a goalkeeper in the club\u2019s 1-0 victory over Arsenal where he famously saved Robin Van Persie\u2019s close-range effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After swapping Sheffield for Merseyside in 2007 and spending 12 years representing Everton, Jagielka returned to Bramall Lane in 2019 following the side\u2019s promotion back to the Premier League, making a further 22 appearances for the club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom said of his second spell at the club: \u201cThere were some key moments where how Phil acted and how he behaved, he really showed why he played at the top for so long and had a tremendous career.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jagielka scored three times in 40 appearances for England, and was a regular at the 2014 World Cup as well as being selected in the Euro 2012 squad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also had short spells at Championship sides Derby County and Stoke City prior to announcing his retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield United shared a video on X of Jagielka\u2019s impressive long-range strike against Leeds in 2002, as well as saying: \u201cCongratulations on an amazing career, Jags!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">He could hit them! \ud83d\udca5\ud83e\udd45<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PJags06?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@PJags06<\/a> \ud83d\udc4f <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/OoofMAgcAe\">pic.twitter.com\/OoofMAgcAe<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Sheffield United (@SheffieldUnited) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SheffieldUnited\/status\/1729489659221201223?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 28, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sheffield United legend Phil Jagielka has announced his retirement from football this week at the age of 41 following a 23-year career.
