{"id":48598,"date":"2023-12-01T16:55:21","date_gmt":"2023-12-01T16:55:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=48598"},"modified":"2024-02-27T17:26:14","modified_gmt":"2024-02-27T17:26:14","slug":"reclaim-the-night-protesters-left-furious-after-the-peaceful-protest-turned-nasty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/12\/01\/reclaim-the-night-protesters-left-furious-after-the-peaceful-protest-turned-nasty\/","title":{"rendered":"Reclaim the Night protesters left \u2018furious\u2019 after the peaceful protest turned nasty"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Women taking part in Sheffield&#8217;s \u2018Reclaim the Night\u2019 march which advocates against violence towards women, were bombarded with verbal and physical abuse on West Street last week. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The women were physically assaulted, barricaded from walking past and even had bottles thrown at them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was accompanied by ongoing verbal abuse, shouting &#8220;get your tits out&#8221; and calling the women \u201clesbians\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee, 26, who took part in the march, said: &#8220;One man shoved one of us out of the way, while his mates stood cheering him on.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also described a female passer-by who was enraged when she saw their sign saying &#8216;consent is sexy&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s quite sad that this is the view she has on consent, she must\u2019ve lived so much of her life without being able to talk to anyone about what she&#8217;s been through.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The march started at Sheffield Cathedral and went through West Street, all the way to Coffee Revs at the University of Sheffield Student Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The campaign started in the 1970s after the \u2018Yorkshire Ripper\u2019 Peter Sutcliffe terrorised women across the streets of the North, and Police responded by telling women to stay inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee said: &#8220;We\u2019re furious and upset that we still need to do this, years after Reclaim the Night was created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Normally we think we have safety in groups, but this proved to us it makes no difference.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also referenced the \u2018Rape Culture Pyramid\u2019, where seemingly small acts like catcalling or verbal abuse can pave the way for wider acceptance of more serious forms of gender-based violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"606\" height=\"408\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/RAPE-PYRAMID.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48606\" style=\"width:349px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/RAPE-PYRAMID.png 606w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/RAPE-PYRAMID-480x323.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 606px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: GenerEqual NZ<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t all bad though as there were some supporters who cheered the protestors on and cars that beeped in encouragement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meeting at Coffee Revs was also a space for the women to discuss the traumatic experience and find solidarity in one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many places for women in Sheffield to find support if they have experienced gender-based violence, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.srasac.org.uk\/about-us\">Sheffield Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre (SRASAC) <\/a> which provides support with recovery, and <a href=\"https:\/\/strutsafe.org\/\">Strut Safe<\/a>, a phone line open on weekend nights, where women can stay on the phone all the way home.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Barnsley Reclaim the Night protest, Source: Holly Phillips<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":158,"featured_media":48746,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[1420,1419,639,9,338],"class_list":["post-48598","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-gender-equality","tag-gender-based-violence","tag-reclaim-the-night","tag-sheffield","tag-south-yorkshire"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.1.1 -
