{"id":48487,"date":"2023-12-01T16:19:34","date_gmt":"2023-12-01T16:19:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=48487"},"modified":"2024-08-19T20:07:53","modified_gmt":"2024-08-19T19:07:53","slug":"bringing-sheffields-felled-trees-back-to-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/12\/01\/bringing-sheffields-felled-trees-back-to-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Bringing Sheffield&#8217;s felled trees back to life"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>A Sheffield sculptor is transforming axed trees into works of art to ensure the city&#8217;s tree legacy lives on.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tree surgeon Alex Vardy-Meers, 36, revitalises trees which have been felled within the community and helps memorialise them by transforming them into sculptures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Community members often commission him to create sculptures as a way of conserving demolished trees which have been around for hundreds of years, or as memorial pieces for family and friends who have passed away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Vardy-Meers said: &#8220;A man whose wife passed away wanted a memorial that would remind him of her so he commissioned me to carve her out of a beach tree and that&#8217;s where he put the ashes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"590\" height=\"439\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48575\" style=\"width:461px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-2.png 590w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-2-480x357.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 590px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A memorial sculpture for Catherine Digby who sadly passed away in early 2019, commissioned by her husband Gary Digby.\u00a0Source: Alex Vardy-Meers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He expressed the sentimental value trees can hold and how these sculptures allow people &#8220;to keep a piece of the tree forever.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Vardy-Meers grew up in Lewisham, South London where he studied Fine Art Painting, but turned to chainsaw sculpting 15-years ago.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His artwork was often inspired by <a href=\"https:\/\/alexvardymeers.com\/about\/\">\u201cnature fighting back in a post-apocalyptic future.\u201d<\/a> which influenced his transition into tree sculpting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city known for its greenery is celebrating National Tree Week between 25 November to 3 December despite the council&#8217;s \u00a32.2b street improvement project, which set out a 25-year plan to fell thousands of Sheffield&#8217;s beloved trees.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This plan caused major public outrage forcing the council to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffield.gov.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/2023-06\/an_open_apology_for_the_behaviour_of_sheffield_city_council_during_the_street_trees_dispute.pdf\">issue an apology.&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They said: \u201cResidents should not have had to fight their Council to retain and value healthy trees, particularly not those with special significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe recognise that we got so much of this wrong and we apologise unreservedly.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The importance of preserving Sheffield\u2019s trees has now fallen to the community.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to check out more of Alex Vardy-Meers\u2019 work go to <a href=\"https:\/\/alexvardymeers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">alexvardymeers.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Sheffield sculptor is transforming axed trees into works of art to ensure the city&#8217;s tree legacy lives on.
