{"id":48413,"date":"2023-12-01T14:53:54","date_gmt":"2023-12-01T14:53:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=48413"},"modified":"2023-12-01T16:41:41","modified_gmt":"2023-12-01T16:41:41","slug":"levelling-up-on-everyones-lips-as-question-time-comes-to-doncaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/12\/01\/levelling-up-on-everyones-lips-as-question-time-comes-to-doncaster\/","title":{"rendered":"Levelling Up on everyone&#8217;s lips as Question Time comes to Doncaster"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Last night&#8217;s <em>Question Time <\/em>was dominated by concerns over Levelling Up as the show returned to Doncaster.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People in the audience wanted to ask a question on the government policy more than any other topic, according to host Fiona Bruce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doncaster residents were eager to find out how the policy to invest in the north would impact their city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the show\u2019s panellists was Cabinet Office Minister, Esther McVey, and Shadow Environment Secretary, Steve Reed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms McVey said: \u201cMillions of pounds have come to Doncaster in the Levelling Up Fund and it\u2019s really important that we do support our businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Mr Reed argued Doncaster has been worse off since the Conservatives took office in 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThis government does not have any interest at all in levelling up this country\u201d<br><br>Labour\u2019s Steve Reed says the government has done the \u201cpolar opposite\u201d to fulfilling levelling up promises and areas such as Doncaster are now \u00a340m worse off<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/bbcqt?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#bbcqt<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kidTACqqFc\">https:\/\/t.co\/kidTACqqFc<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1kwFAPlSFM\">pic.twitter.com\/1kwFAPlSFM<\/a><\/p>&mdash; BBC Question Time (@bbcquestiontime) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bbcquestiontime\/status\/1730358343548403966?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 30, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The debate on levelling up in Doncaster came just over a week after the Autumn Statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In it, the Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, announced \u00a325m of the Levelling Up Fund would be spent on development projects in <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/11\/24\/parkwood-springs-and-doncaster-areas-to-receive-levelling-up-funding\/\">Moorends and Mexborough<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also on the panel was editor of <em>The Spectator, <\/em>Andrew Neil, who spoke of his frustrations with the implementation of the Levelling Up policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking directly to the audience, he said: \u201cFrom what I\u2019ve just heard, you\u2019re not happy and you have every right to be not happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think levelling up was a wonderful idea. It\u2019s just a pity it was never implemented.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government say they are committed to investing \u00a313bn in Levelling Up projects across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the Conservative Party Conference in October, the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, announced the northern leg of the HS2 rail project would be scrapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He promised to divert \u00a336bn into improving transport in the north and midlands instead, according to the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2023\/oct\/04\/industry-backlash-at-sunaks-damaging-u-turn-on-northern-leg-of-hs2\">Guardian<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liberal Democrat Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Layla Moran, another <em>Question Time<\/em> panellist, spoke of her dismay at HS2\u2019s northern leg being scrapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cI would\u2019ve started [the project] in the north and gone south.
