{"id":48326,"date":"2023-12-01T15:11:03","date_gmt":"2023-12-01T15:11:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=48326"},"modified":"2023-12-01T15:31:58","modified_gmt":"2023-12-01T15:31:58","slug":"five-fire-engines-tackle-blaze-in-sheffield-student-flat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/12\/01\/five-fire-engines-tackle-blaze-in-sheffield-student-flat\/","title":{"rendered":"Five fire engines tackle blaze in Sheffield students flat"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The shared kitchen in a students flat caught fire in the early hours of Tuesday morning, leaving students &#8220;worried and scared&#8221; for their safety.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fire began in a shared kitchen in Sharman Court at 12.15am Tuesday, and was dealt with by 2.45am.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peixu Du, 23 who lives in the flat, waited outside of the building for three hours, and he couldn\u2019t fall asleep until after 4am because his room smelled of smoke.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cI thought the fire alarm would only last a few minutes and then stop, but it just kept going off and on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI walked out and saw everyone downstairs looking up. There was very heavy white smoke coming out, and then it turned to black smoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was worried and scared. From the outside of the flat, you can see that the inside of the burning building was very dark,\u201d Mr Du said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Blaze in Sheffield student flat, Sharman Court on Tuesday morning\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3cfl5T2KML8?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Katherine Yao, 22, a student at the University of Sheffield who lives in another block said: \u201cI was sleeping and had no idea what\u2019s going on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI guessed it was something burning in my room, but after checking all the appliances and finding that everything was fine. I realised that the smell was from someone else\u2019s room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was a bit angry at first, when I was woken up by the fire alarm ringing, then I started to worry that the fire would spread to my room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe building reeked of smoke. Fortunately, no one was injured.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe exact cause has been hard to determine but was most likely caused either by an extractor fan or airfryer.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also added: \u201cAlways keep an eye on your cooking and never leave it unattended, turn appliances\/cooker off when you\u2019ve gone to bed and if you come home after a night out, get a takeaway rather than try and cook anything.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The shared kitchen in a students flat caught fire in the early hours of Tuesday morning, leaving students &#8220;worried and scared&#8221; for their safety.
