{"id":47997,"date":"2023-11-24T16:38:23","date_gmt":"2023-11-24T16:38:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=47997"},"modified":"2023-11-24T16:41:33","modified_gmt":"2023-11-24T16:41:33","slug":"weve-had-people-from-europe-coming-to-visit-national-videogame-museum-celebrates-5th-birthday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/11\/24\/weve-had-people-from-europe-coming-to-visit-national-videogame-museum-celebrates-5th-birthday\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;We&#8217;ve had people from Europe coming to visit&#8221;: National Videogame Museum celebrates 5th birthday"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The National Videogame Museum, the only museum in the UK dedicated entirely to videogames, turns five today.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum first opened on the 24th of November 2018 and contains almost 5,000 video game related items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, the museum has welcomed over 50,000 visitors this year, its highest number yet, with 70% of visitors coming from outside the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christian Beckett, Marketing and Communications Officer at the museum, said: \u201cOver the last year the number of visitors has significantly increased and we\u2019ve become really established in Sheffield, but what\u2019s really amazing is that people are coming specifically to Sheffield to visit us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve even had people from Europe coming to visit as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re really starting to establish ourselves as a really good attraction, not just for the city but for South Yorkshire in general.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the pandemic, the museum was supported by the Arts Council Recovery Fund, its patrons and its governing body, the British Games Institute (BGI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also held its first online exhibition, &#8216;The Animal Crossing Diaries&#8217;, which showed how people stayed connected to each other by playing video games. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking to Museums + Heritage, Co-CEO of the museum Cat Powell <a href=\"https:\/\/advisor.museumsandheritage.com\/features\/5-lessons-from-five-years-of-the-national-videogame-museum\/\">said<\/a>: \u201cLike many cultural organisations, recent times have been challenging for the Museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe survived the impact of the pandemic with the Arts Council England Culture Recovery Fund, plus support from patrons in the videogame industry and community fundraisers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s humbling to learn that so many people value our work and are willing to step in when needed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking forward, the National Videogame Museum wants to become accredited by the Museums Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joel Arthur, who used to visit the museum before becoming a member of staff, said: \u201cThe fact that we\u2019ve five years old today and can celebrate like this is a really good feeling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want to see us keep growing and continue to expand gaming culture and knowledge around Sheffield and all of Yorkshire.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum offered visitors a \u00a35 discount on all kinds of tickets to mark the occasion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Videogame Museum, the only museum in the UK dedicated entirely to videogames, turns five today.
