{"id":47957,"date":"2023-11-24T16:19:39","date_gmt":"2023-11-24T16:19:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=47957"},"modified":"2023-12-08T16:42:14","modified_gmt":"2023-12-08T16:42:14","slug":"sheffield-charity-shop-volunteer-82-wins-sense-volunteer-of-the-year-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/11\/24\/sheffield-charity-shop-volunteer-82-wins-sense-volunteer-of-the-year-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield charity shop volunteer, 82, wins Sense Volunteer of the Year award"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>A charity shop volunteer from Hillsborough received a coveted honour at the Sense Awards ceremony last night. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Owen Graham began volunteering at Sense in Hillsborough when it first opened four years ago, following the death of his wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Graham has been described by his colleagues as the &#8220;backbone of the shop&#8221;, often working seven days a week when the store is short staffed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Sense Awards, celebrating the achievements of people with complex disabilities and those who work for the charity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his free time, Mr Graham takes children&#8217;s toys and watches home from the shop to test and fit with batteries he buys himself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/sense-awards\/\">Sense<\/a> website, the Volunteer of the Year category celebrates the &#8220;tremendous commitment and dedication of Sense volunteers&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fsensesheffield%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0EMZQkW5VAfr2Fx6kQiHopD2YCuKSYVTYBbrCJ7extGXbPFQJ3cKJ4bHdCPw1VLy1l&#038;show_text=true&#038;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"850\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>Accepting the award, Mr Own said: &#8220;Thank you for voting me Sense Volunteer of the Year. I&#8217;m a passionate supporter of Sense. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve worked in the optical profession all my life, so Sense&#8217;s principles mean a lot to me. I hope this inspires others to volunteer at Sense Sheffield and give it the respect that it deserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is an incredible honour and I say thank you to everyone who voted.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daisy Palmer, assistant manager of Sense Sheffield said: \u201cWe are incredibly proud of Owen, he is one of our hardest working volunteers, and he really is one in a million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe works so hard for the charity, which he is very passionate about, sometimes working seven days week at 82 years old! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Palmer said that Mr Graham is a key holder of the Hillsborough store and customers often ask after him when he is enjoying a rare day off. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He pretty much runs the show anyway and it is exhausting trying to fight him to get him to take a day off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOwen getting the award is amazing, and we are glad to see people appreciating him as much as we do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A charity shop volunteer from Hillsborough received a coveted honour at the Sense Awards ceremony last night.
