{"id":46866,"date":"2023-05-12T12:11:50","date_gmt":"2023-05-12T11:11:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=46866"},"modified":"2023-05-12T14:04:41","modified_gmt":"2023-05-12T13:04:41","slug":"sheffield-allotments-are-un-walkable-unfriendly-and-inaccessible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/05\/12\/sheffield-allotments-are-un-walkable-unfriendly-and-inaccessible\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield allotments are \u201cun-walkable, unfriendly, and inaccessible\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A resident in Sheffield has claimed that there is currently only one accessible allotment in the city for disabled people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Norma Smith, 67, claims Burncross allotments is the only site that she would be able to use, as she is disabled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Smith regularly attends physiotherapy for fibromyalgia and arthritis, claiming it is up to Sheffield City Council to change the accessibility of allotments in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cNearly all of the allotments in the city are unwalkable and inaccessible for me to get to.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have to get my husband to drive me to the closest possible spot to the entrance as I am unable to walk very far on uneven and dangerous paths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnother main issue is that most of the people who deal with the allocation of allotments are unfriendly; I am seventh on the list for an allotment but I see spare ones getting overgrown every time I go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield City Council <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffield.gov.uk\/parks-sport-recreation\/allotments\">state<\/a> they manage over 3,000 allotment plots on over 70 sites, but with only \u201csome\u201d designed for disabled people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also say they can \u201ccreate accessible plots at some sites when needed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Smith stated the problems occurring in allotments in Sheffield include inaccessible parking, limited car space, lack of wheelchair ramps, unsafe roads and damaged paths.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of the existing physical issues of the sites, Sheffield City Council charges three times more for hiring an allotment than neighbouring committees such as Doncaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To use an allotment for the year, Sheffield charges from \u00a380 to \u00a3100, whereas Doncaster charges around just \u00a320.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Smith claims the allotment in Hag Hill, Rivelin, has a side road that could be used, with many spare allotments going to waste as it is inaccessible for gardeners like her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allotments like Endcliffe Student Village are physically accessible, but are privately owned by the University of Sheffield and therefore unavailable for the public to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ways to make allotments more accessible include raised beds, wheelchair friendly tables, and more seating around the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield City Council have been contacted for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A resident in Sheffield has claimed that there is currently only one accessible allotment in the city for disabled people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":105,"featured_media":46867,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1215],"tags":[1254,521,1208,1096,9,58,338],"class_list":["post-46866","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-disabilities","tag-allotments","tag-disability","tag-disabled","tag-gardens","tag-sheffield","tag-sheffield-city-council","tag-south-yorkshire"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
