We will escalate this marking and assessment boycott even further.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, she added \u2018There is time to avoid this\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cThere is time to revoke the threats. There is time to put a better offer on the table. There are far more mature ways to actually solve these problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think the marking boycott is absolutely disgraceful. I\u2019m paying to come to one of the greatest universities in the World and I&#8217;m incredibly disappointed they can\u2019t sort out small problems like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When discussing the pay cuts lecturers will receive for the boycott, Yeyah added: \u201cIf they don\u2019t mark their papers, they really deserve to get their pay cut. They ought to do their job, so if they\u2019re going to get a pay cut for not doing their job, I think that\u2019s fair.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Yeyah is not alone. Paul Nowak, General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress said: \u201cSolidarity to every UCU member taking part in the marking and assessment boycott, fighting for decent pay and conditions. The decision to boycott was included in the options for actions short of a strike (ASOS) contained in the recent ballot paper.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The staff taking part in the marking boycott will stop all summative marking and associated assessment duties for all levels of students in higher education and professional training, affecting the results of thousands of students nationwide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the 145 universities, two Sheffield universities will participate: The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lecturer at the Social Sciences faculty at the University of Sheffield, who will be participating in the boycott said: &#8220;We just want to be valued for the work we do whilst also supporting our students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the lecturer said it wasn&#8217;t an easy choice to make, they felt like they had no other option. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They said: &#8220;We know this choice is not easy and will be harmful, but we&#8217;re not being listened to, I hope they will listen to the students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s just really sad how the students have been treated more like banks, than human beings, things need to change, they added.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The boycott will continue until the current disputes are settled, the UCU calls the boycott off, or at the end of the industrial action ballot mandate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-tiktok wp-block-embed-tiktok\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"tiktok-embed\" cite=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@sheffield_wire\/video\/7225589387558489350\" data-video-id=\"7225589387558489350\" data-embed-from=\"oembed\" style=\"max-width: 605px;min-width: 325px;\" > <section> <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"@sheffield_wire\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@sheffield_wire?refer=embed\">@sheffield_wire<\/a> <p>The Sheffield Wire spoke to Sheffield University students about the marking and assessment boycott which is affecting students up and down the country. marking <a title=\"ucu\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/ucu?refer=embed\">#ucu<\/a> uos <a title=\"boycott\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/boycott?refer=embed\">#boycott<\/a> <a title=\"university\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/university?refer=embed\">#university<\/a> students lecturers <a title=\"strikeaction\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/strikeaction?refer=embed\">#strikeaction<\/a><\/p> <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"\u266c original sound - Sheffield Wire - Sheffield Wire\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/music\/original-sound-Sheffield-Wire-7225589789578251034?refer=embed\">\u266c original sound &#8211; Sheffield Wire &#8211; Sheffield Wire<\/a> <\/section> <\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed.js\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffield.ac.uk\/industrial-action\/staff\/latest-updates\">statement <\/a>made by Ian Wright, Director of HR at the University of Sheffield to their colleagues, they stated the boycott \u2018presents significant challenges for our University community.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cProtecting students\u2019 interest is our priority throughout this upcoming action, so we are doing whatever we can to mitigate the impact on them, including ensuring marking and assessment are completed as required, to enable students to progress and graduate\u201d, he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the boycott is not restricted to final examinations and final projects, students fear potential delays in their results could alter their graduation dates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of student complaints hit a record high in 2022, according to the Office of Independent Adjudicator.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, over 2,850 complaints were received, a rise of three per cent from 2021. Of these complaints, a total of over one million pounds was awarded in compensation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This demonstrates the ongoing issues are not just affecting staff members, but also continue to affect their paying students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A third-year University of Sheffield student, who has just handed in her dissertation, stands in solidarity with the boycotting members.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cIt\u2019s going to be a bit of an inconvenience to everybody who wants to graduate on time, as it is going to impact everybody quite badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re doing it for a reason.
