{"id":45784,"date":"2023-03-27T15:43:10","date_gmt":"2023-03-27T15:43:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=45784"},"modified":"2023-03-27T15:43:13","modified_gmt":"2023-03-27T15:43:13","slug":"local-charity-fights-against-the-demolition-of-historic-sheffield-building","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/03\/27\/local-charity-fights-against-the-demolition-of-historic-sheffield-building\/","title":{"rendered":"Local charity fights against the demolition of historic Sheffield building"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The demolition of Mappin&#8217;s Coffee House, which was bought by KMS Estates, is being challenged by a charity and protesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leading the campaign against the demolition is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhbs.org.uk\/\">Hallamshire Historic Buildings<\/a> (HHBS), a volunteer-run charity which aims to protect the architectural heritage of Sheffield and surrounding areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They claim the commercial development business KMS Estates Ltd are attempting to fast-track the building&#8217;s demolition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The charity said on their main site: &#8220;Mappin\u2019s Coffee House complements the Victorian shop fronts alongside it. The proposed replacement building would be a disproportionate and overbearing blight on London Road.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">URGENT &#8211; we have discovered that KMS Estates Ltd are attempting to fast track demolition of Mappin&#39;s Coffee House, bypassing the planning process underway. This important building could be lost in days unless <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SheffCouncil?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SheffCouncil<\/a> intervenes with an Article 4 direction to protect it. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jyZXN6R8vP\">pic.twitter.com\/jyZXN6R8vP<\/a><\/p>&mdash; HHBS (@HHBuildings) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HHBuildings\/status\/1640100387318317056?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 26, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>HHBS have put forward the hashtag #savemappinscoffeehouse in an effort to get the preservation of the building trending. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They claim that unless <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SheffCouncil\">Sheffield City Council<\/a> intervene with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffield.gov.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/docs\/planning-and-development\/planning-applications\/Article%204%20Direction%20Report.pdf\">Article 4<\/a> direction to protect the building, then the Steel City could face losing the landmark as early as 5 April. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HHBS stated they found this decision &#8220;by accident&#8221; with no prior notification from the city council planning department. As of this week, the charity found over 110 people objecting to these development plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is a socially important and locally innovative building designed by one of Sheffield\u2019s most prominent<br>architectural practices for an outstanding philanthropist, social reformer and metal trades entrepreneur. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It makes a strong contribution to the streetscape both in its architecture and its illustration of historical development.
