{"id":45656,"date":"2023-03-27T13:55:31","date_gmt":"2023-03-27T13:55:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=45656"},"modified":"2023-03-27T14:54:46","modified_gmt":"2023-03-27T14:54:46","slug":"the-children-need-you-ranmoor-scout-group-will-close-unless-volunteers-are-found","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/03\/27\/the-children-need-you-ranmoor-scout-group-will-close-unless-volunteers-are-found\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;The children need you&#8221;: Ranmoor Scout Group will close unless volunteers are found"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A shortage of volunteers means the 36th Sheffield Scout Group, which covers the Crosspool and Ranmoor area, will close if it doesn\u2019t find any new recruits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Scout section (for ages 10 and above) is currently without a leader, while the Beaver and Cub groups (six to eight year-olds and eight to 10) are in desperate need of a helping hand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael Holmes, the Group Scout Leader, said many adults don&#8217;t think they have the right skills to become a Scout Leader, meaning they don&#8217;t put themselves forward.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost parents have got the skills &#8211; even if they don\u2019t think they have. Really, it\u2019s a desire to help your young children become good citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/cubs-rafting-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45791\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/cubs-rafting-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/cubs-rafting-980x735.jpg 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/cubs-rafting-480x360.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Scouts put on a range of activities to help young children develop life skills<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The 36th Sheffield Scout Group is almost 100 years old and has been one of the largest groups of its kind for many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Scout Leader is a managerial role who works closely with assistant leaders to deliver a fulfilling experience. All training, including a DBS check, is provided by the Scouts. The only real cost is their time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the COVID-19 pandemic people\u2019s jobs and ability to commit their time has changed, leading to a drop in volunteers, Mr Holmes said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe children need you,\u201d he added. \u201cSomeone who can give one night a month would still be useful to us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is currently a waiting list of children for the group. If they had the leaders then they would be able take all of the children on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jo Owens is the Beaver Leader but has had to give in her notice because of other commitments.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just our group that\u2019s struggling for leaders. It\u2019s a similar situation across the region and the country,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG_1633-853x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45766\" width=\"567\" height=\"680\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG_1633-853x1024.jpg 567w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG_1633-480x576.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 567px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Beaver Leader Jo Owens and her daughter Hazel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Pre-Covid, there were 156,647 Scout volunteers across the UK. There are now only 139,461 &#8211; almost 20,000 less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt would be sad to lose such a long-running Scout group,\u201d the Beaver Leader and mum said. \u201cWhere else can you find a group that does something different every week?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLots of people were in the Scouts and then became leaders when they were adults. It\u2019s sad we can\u2019t offer the next generation the same,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ranmoor \/ Crosspool Scout Group is looking for around six volunteers.
