You shouldn&#8217;t think that when you set off in the morning. I shrugged questioningly (not aggressive or rude) and he saluted. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lMKsz5Aaqs\">pic.twitter.com\/lMKsz5Aaqs<\/a><\/p>&mdash; llamasteve (@llamasteve) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/llamasteve\/status\/1592527718314348548?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 15, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The safety of cycling in Sheffield has been an important topic of discussion following the crash of broadcaster Dan Walker.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Walker was cycling around the roundabout at the junction of Moore Street and St Mary&#8217;s Gate on 24 February, and said he was <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/02\/20\/breaking-dan-walker-hit-by-car\/\">\u2018glad to be alive\u2019<\/a> after colliding with a car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two of the main arguments arising on social media after the incident concerned who was at fault for the incident, and whether Mr Walker\u2019s helmet saved his life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some users also questioned why Mr Walker didn&#8217;t use the underpass below the roundabout, but others said it was often very busy with pedestrians and debris makes it unsafe at times. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Thought I&#39;d see if the glass from earlier this week had been cleared up from the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/cycle?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#cycle<\/a> path on the roundabout underpass where <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mrdanwalker?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@mrdanwalker<\/a> came a cropper this week.  And instead found this.  <br><br>There&#39;s debris everywhere so avoid for a bit.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/cycling?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#cycling<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Sheffield?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Sheffield<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/P0esNsQ9FK\">pic.twitter.com\/P0esNsQ9FK<\/a><\/p>&mdash; CyclingInASkirt (@CyclingInASkirt) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CyclingInASkirt\/status\/1629029694627631105?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 24, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclesheffield.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/South-Yorkshire-Cycling-Action-Plan-April-2015.pdf\">South Yorkshire\u2019s Cycling Action Plan<\/a>, from 2015, aimed to increase the share of cycling to 10% of all journeys by 2025, and to 25% by 2050.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But questions still remain about the viability of this target when accidents are happening <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.co.uk\/news\/transport\/road-safety-cyclists-in-sheffield-among-the-most-at-risk-of-an-accident-new-study-reveals-3681554\">frequently across the city<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Triple Olympic Champion, Ed Clancy OBE, 37, was appointed South Yorkshire\u2019s active travel commissioner by Mayor Oliver Coppard in February 2023 and stated he was committed to addressing this issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cSouth Yorkshire has some of the deadliest roads in the country and this stops people choosing to walk or ride the short distances they currently drive, which just adds to the pollution and the danger.
