This comes after random checks last week exposed low standards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, SYP stopped a total of 14 HGV&#8217;s and two LGV&#8217;s last week. Of these, one of the HGV&#8217;s stopped had a flat tyre, and another was overloaded with excess cargo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further, two drivers had exceeded their driving hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roads Policing Inspector Matt Collings said: &#8220;When you have stood in front of a victim\u2019s loved one and told them of their loss, you realise how every effort is needed to make people think about their actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Those in larger vehicles such as HGV&#8217;s and LGV\u2019s have to adhere to laws around driving hours and weight as it affects judgement, stopping distance and the safety of everyone else.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SYP identified inaccurate loads, poor maintenance and tired drivers as increasing risks to innocent road users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This comes as SYP join seven other forces across the country to launch &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/03\/06\/south-yorkshire-police-launch-weeklong-operation-to-tackle-unsafe-driving-on-the-m1\/\">Operation Freeway<\/a>&#8216;, using unmarked HGV&#8217;s, provided by National Highways, to tackle unsafe driving on the M1. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The operation is focused on drivers failing to wear seatbelts, using a phone while driving, and failing to control their vehicle, among other offences.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After issues raised during random checks on HGV&#8217;s and LGV&#8217;s last week, South Yorkshire Police have stressed the importance of good vehicle maintenance and driver&#8217;s following correct hours.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":117,"featured_media":44993,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[1075,1073,1049,1072,1051,1074,1050,9,20],"class_list":["post-44925","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-driver-and-vehicle-standards-agency","tag-flat-tyre","tag-hgvs","tag-lgvs","tag-m1","tag-motorway","tag-road-safety","tag-sheffield","tag-south-yorkshire-police"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.1.1 -
