{"id":44911,"date":"2023-03-06T14:57:48","date_gmt":"2023-03-06T14:57:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=44911"},"modified":"2023-03-06T14:57:51","modified_gmt":"2023-03-06T14:57:51","slug":"decision-to-close-key-footpath-in-crookes-sheffield-referred-to-whitehall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/03\/06\/decision-to-close-key-footpath-in-crookes-sheffield-referred-to-whitehall\/","title":{"rendered":"Decision to close key footpath in Crookes, Sheffield referred to Whitehall\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Plans to close a footpath crossing a former community garden have been sent to the Secretary for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs after an objection was received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The footpath, which has been used as a common area for over 50 years, links Cobden View Road and Northfield Road in Crookes, a Sheffield suburb about 1.5 miles from the city centre.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was recognised as a public right of way after an application was granted in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/q9cvkAuCkDpmjTa-fOnvP6e5dqlyYnF0to5hhMxKalvox3r_kMKuCw7b1CQ2PzXpqt9Fln6JdB7fh-iQ6rqchXZhrg7dlVsPLhTg-ds9_K0RRD7jewyKX-pLAfUF4M354_xSJZ2SZ_mPALE7Ly2Kr5s\" alt=\"\" width=\"613\" height=\"440\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The order to close the footpath can\u2019t be confirmed without approval from the Secretary of State.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Council officers believe that, despite the objection, the Council will still be able to achieve the closure of the path on the basis it is necessary to facilitate development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An objection to the closure of the footpath states: \u201cIt is a valuable local asset, both functionally and aesthetically.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also claims that the footpath is much safer than the alternative route, which is steep and could be dangerous in wet or icy weather.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The objection mentions parents prefer using the footpath when walking their children to school as it&#8217;s further away from the main road and therefore safer.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opposition comes a year after members of the Crookes community lost a petition signed by 673 people to save the adjacent green space from development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-03-06-at-14.17.56.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44982\" width=\"514\" height=\"686\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-03-06-at-14.17.56.jpeg 514w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-03-06-at-14.17.56-480x640.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 514px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image of the footpath. Photo credit: Rachel Flynn<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There were over 100 objections to a planning application by Urbana Town and Planning to build six family homes on the green space on Cobden View Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in June 2022, it was approved by Sheffield City Council Planning and Highways Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/democracy.sheffield.gov.uk\/documents\/s52728\/22-00723-FUL%20Cobden%20View%20Road.pdfThanks\">report <\/a>about the housing development, Sheffield Planning officers state \u201cthere would be no objection to the diversion of this as it would not result in people having to travel a significantly greater distance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minesh Parekh, Labour and Cooperative Councillor for Crookes and Crosspool, said: \u201cIf we\u2019re looking to address the climate and nature emergencies we need to protect green spaces in urban environments.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG_8109-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44922\" width=\"541\" height=\"721\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image of the footpath set for closure.
