Golf is bringing in billions of pounds to the UK economy, according to a study that \u2018surprised\u2019 Sheffield Hallam University researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report, funded by the R&A<\/a>, one of golf\u2019s governing bodies, set out to find how much golf would contribute to the economy if it had its own account<\/a> and measured the change between 2014 and 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It revealed that consumer spending on golf rose by 20% over five years to \u00a35.1bn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Simon Shibli, one of the researchers involved in the report, said: \u201cWhat surprised me is that golf, a single sport, accounts for 10% of consumer expenditure on sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo here you\u2019ve got one sport, out of over 100 recognised sports, contributing quite a sizeable proportion of the overall sports industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As well as measuring golf\u2019s economic effects, the report also investigated the sport\u2019s social impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report found it contributed \u00a31.04bn in \u2018social value\u2019, including the improved mental wellbeing of players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But not all are convinced by the findings. James Glover, general manager of Hallamshire Golf Club, said the rise is down to \u2018golf tourism\u2019 at the country\u2019s biggest courses, with more local clubs being less affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said: \u201cIf you looked at most golf clubs, most of them don\u2019t run a huge, if any, profit, most are just covering their expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t dispute the figures, but I think if you were really looking at it, you would see there\u2019s perhaps a regionalised bias for where that increase is coming. I\u2019m not sure we\u2019re seeing a huge amount of that in Sheffield.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While acknowledging the massive role of golf tourism, Prof Shibli said the evidence goes against the elitist image of the sport and suggests grassroots growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said: \u201cCertainly it\u2019s easy to stereotype golfers as middle-aged businesspeople or accountants indulging in their hobby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut the reality is, if 17% of the population of Scotland are playing, it is a sport of the people. It\u2019s probably a more democratic sport than it\u2019s given credit for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prof Shibli also pointed out there was a clear public interest in the report, as it also found that golf raised \u00a31.3bn in tax money in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said: \u201cWhat goes into golf from public sources is measured in the low millions, and yet it\u2019s generating over a billion in revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo the more money you put into golf, the more you encourage it, the more the government will get back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
