{"id":44676,"date":"2023-03-06T11:39:05","date_gmt":"2023-03-06T11:39:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=44676"},"modified":"2023-04-25T10:29:03","modified_gmt":"2023-04-25T10:29:03","slug":"northern-leaders-are-discussing-how-to-fix-south-yorkshires-broken-transport-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/03\/06\/northern-leaders-are-discussing-how-to-fix-south-yorkshires-broken-transport-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"Northern leaders discuss fixing South Yorkshire&#8217;s broken transport systems"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The state of South Yorkshire&#8217;s broken transport network has been a topic of discussion this week as leaders from across the North discuss how to transform public transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/southyorkshire-ca.gov.uk\/news\/article\/51bdc112-62f0-4758-ad00-7257e96b5f5f\">Mayor Oliver Coppard<\/a> convened a Transport Summit on 1 March to discuss the future of the region&#8217;s public transport and bring together experts in the field to help fix the system that has seen thousands of train cancellations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: &#8220;My vision is for public transport as a public service, the clue is in the title; trains, buses, bike lanes that create and sustain our communities rather than being at the mercy of officials in London or shareholders in Dubai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Getting there won\u2019t be cheap, and it won\u2019t be easy. Change is hard, but change is what we need.&quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ConnectingSouthYorkshire?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ConnectingSouthYorkshire<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SYTransportSummit?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SYTransportSummit<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1HmJ28e0J6\">pic.twitter.com\/1HmJ28e0J6<\/a><\/p>&mdash; South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (@SouthYorksMCA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SouthYorksMCA\/status\/1631003042718908435?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 1, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Trains in South Yorkshire are frequently being cancelled with one of the area&#8217;s main train lines, TransPennine Express, on track to cancel 23,000 services this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking on the TransPennine Express train cancellations, Tracy Brabin, the mayor of West Yorkshire, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sounds\/play\/m001js85\">BBC Radio 4&#8217;s Today programme<\/a>: \u201cThe first four weeks of this year, over 1700 scheduled services, during that four week period were cancelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If things don\u2019t improve, by the end of the year, 23,000 services will have been cancelled. This is totally unacceptable, and ministers must get a grip.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We asked members of the public in Sheffield what they thought of the state of the rail service in the North.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-soundcloud wp-block-embed-soundcloud\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How would you describe the state of the rail service in the North? by Mecooke1\" width=\"1080\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?visual=true&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F1462547545&#038;show_artwork=true&#038;maxheight=1000&#038;maxwidth=1080\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This comes as the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/transportforthenorth.com\/press-release\/transport-for-the-north-annual-conference-announced\/\">Transport for the North conference<\/a> will be held today (6 March) in Newcastle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference will bring Northern leaders together to discuss how the lack of investment in transport infrastructure is preventing its success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>North of Tyne Mayor, Jamie Driscoll, said: \u201cI\u2019m alarmed at how bad our transport system has got. Kids can\u2019t get to school. I\u2019ve heard of businesses not opening because staff can\u2019t get to work. The North deserves better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUntil we get a public transport system that\u2019s as fast as a car, that\u2019s affordable, reliable and where everyone feels safe travelling day or night, we\u2019ll never get the economic lift off we need or tackle the climate emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;With the newly agreed devolved powers on transport, we have a once in a generation opportunity to fix this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard is unable to attend the conference due to a clash in his schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has confirmed that while he could not be at Transport for the North, he instead attended a SYMCA board meeting at which &#8220;huge sums of funding for active travel&#8221; have been agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019m sorry I can\u2019t be at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Transport4North?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Transport4North<\/a> Annual Conference in Newcastle today.
