{"id":44246,"date":"2023-02-27T14:05:17","date_gmt":"2023-02-27T14:05:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=44246"},"modified":"2023-07-27T11:44:42","modified_gmt":"2023-07-27T10:44:42","slug":"expert-reaction-to-sheffield-council-16-million-castlegate-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/02\/27\/expert-reaction-to-sheffield-council-16-million-castlegate-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"Expert reaction to Sheffield Council \u00a316 million Castlegate plan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A demolition site in the middle of Sheffield city centre could be \u201creactivated\u201d under a \u00a316m plan, but how the city council is managing it has been questioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Money was secured from the <a href=\"https:\/\/levellingup.campaign.gov.uk\/\">Levelling Up Fund<\/a> to transform the plot in Castlegate, where Sheffield Castle stood in the Middle Ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan will involve excavating some of the castle and creating a park and event space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Martin Gorman, Chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/friendsofsheffieldcastle.org.uk\/\">Friends of Sheffield Castle<\/a>, said: \u201cIt\u2019s a huge area that\u2019s just a wasteland that needs to be reactivated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/CDADE76B-B59B-47ED-8929-EE38B9A26336-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/CDADE76B-B59B-47ED-8929-EE38B9A26336-980x551.jpeg 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/CDADE76B-B59B-47ED-8929-EE38B9A26336-480x270.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Since Castle Market closed in 2013, the Castle site has been a demolition site<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Friends published&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/friendsofsheffieldcastle.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/FoSC-Bluepirnt.pdf\">their own blueprint<\/a>&nbsp;for the site in 2018 and some of their ideas were used by the council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Mr Gorman said it was \u201cdisappointing\u201d that the council has not allowed for more of the castle to be excavated, due to rising costs and supply issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the castle is important to the city\u2019s heritage, as the site where Sheffield began: \u201cEveryone knows about the industrial history of Sheffield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut the story of our medieval history has never really been told. It tells the story of Sheffield\u2019s history right back to the year zero.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIt tells the story of Sheffield\u2019s history right back to the year zero.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SheffieldCastle?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SheffieldCastle<\/a>&#39;s Martin Gorman on the importance of the site where Sheffield began: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sscPp7qU8i\">pic.twitter.com\/sscPp7qU8i<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Sheffield Wire (@Sheffield_Wire) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Sheffield_Wire\/status\/1630223305507520513?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 27, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite his concerns, Mr Gorman said excavating some of the castle is at least a start that can be built on later down the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cIt would have been very easy [for the council] to say \u2018we\u2019ll allocate a building plot to that area and forget the archaeology\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut the council have listened and said \u2018ok, we\u2019ll create the design around that\u2019 and it gives us the opportunity to do additional archaeology at a later date.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cllr Mazher Iqbal, co-chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee, defended the council\u2019s plans for Castlegate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffnews.com\/news\/levelling-up-planning-application-submitted-for-transformation-of-castle-site\">press release<\/a>, he said: \u201cOur teams have worked incredibly hard to develop a plan which brings together the history of the space and offers an inviting space for Sheffielders to visit and enjoy within the city centre.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The council\u2019s planning application can be viewed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/planningapps.sheffield.gov.uk\/online-applications\/applicationDetails.do?keyVal=RQ2PY6NYI5P00&amp;activeTab=summary\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sheffield Council has submitted a planning application to regenerate the city&#8217;s medieval centre.
