{"id":44233,"date":"2023-02-27T10:21:22","date_gmt":"2023-02-27T10:21:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=44233"},"modified":"2023-02-27T11:41:35","modified_gmt":"2023-02-27T11:41:35","slug":"stories-from-the-pandemic-exhibition-opening-brings-tales-of-lockdown-sheffield-to-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/02\/27\/stories-from-the-pandemic-exhibition-opening-brings-tales-of-lockdown-sheffield-to-life\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Stories from the Pandemic&#8217; exhibition opening brings tales of lockdown Sheffield to life"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Diverse experiences of the pandemic are being showcased at Sheffield&#8217;s Millennium gallery in an exhibition which opened on Friday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStories from the Pandemic\u201d features endless tales of love, loss and solidarity which unfolded across the city during the COVID-19 lockdowns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mike Fitter from Broomhall, Sheffield, who contributed his story of losing his wife Gina to Covid, said: \u201cSome people think you have to get over grief, but someone very dear to you dies, they don\u2019t just go away &#8211; that grief is always there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut the grief is not always depressing. I like to use the metaphor that the it will stay within me, but I somehow grow around it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition, which opened on 24 February, is a collaboration between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.compassionate-sheffield.co.uk\/\">Compassionate Sheffield<\/a>, social enterprise <a href=\"https:\/\/weareopus.org\/about\/\">Opus<\/a> and Sheffield City Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving accounts of pandemic life are arranged across the exhibit, which is furnished as if it was a lockdown house, complete with hand sanitiser and a stash of toilet rolls.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1772\" height=\"1336\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-27-at-10.03.38-edited-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-27-at-10.03.38-edited-1.png 1772w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-27-at-10.03.38-edited-1-1280x965.png 1280w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-27-at-10.03.38-edited-1-980x739.png 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-27-at-10.03.38-edited-1-480x362.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) and (max-width: 1280px) 1280px, (min-width: 1281px) 1772px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Cllr Paul Taylor, Head of Customer Services at Sheffield City Council and coordinator of its Covid memorial activities, said: \u201cIt\u2019s not just about loss, it\u2019s about how the community came together and how everybody found a way through it, and all of that is captured here which is brilliant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want to lose the bonds the community formed with each other during the pandemic.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The masses of stories collected will be stored in the city\u2019s archives, and some will be incorporated into a <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffnews.com\/news\/artist-chosen-to-create-sheffields-permanent-covid-memorial-sculpture\">new memorial<\/a> set to be unveiled on the second anniversary of the UK\u2019s first lockdown (23 March 2023).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sculpture, designed by architect <a href=\"https:\/\/georgekingarchitects.com\/portfolio-item\/sheffield-covid-memorial\/\">George King<\/a>, will be on display at Balm Green Gardens close to Sheffield City Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will commemorate the lives lost to Covid and the efforts of those who worked to keep the country safe during the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nick Deayton, Programme Manager at Compassionate Sheffield, said the pandemic may have faded from some of our memories, but the lessons learnt have changed society forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"767\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-27-at-10.12.23-1024x767.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-27-at-10.12.23-980x734.png 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-27-at-10.12.23-480x360.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cWe\u2019re stumbling into the next catastrophe with the cost-of-living crisis, and I don\u2019t think people have properly healed from the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hope people feel encouraged and inspired to do the small things that make a massive difference to people\u2019s lives, and that sense of collectivism and compassion built in the pandemic will see us through.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield City Council and Compassionate Sheffield\u2019s joint Covid memorial work has so far included more than ten community exhibitions, film screenings and food events across the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has also facilitated up to \u00a32000 of grants made available to community groups and organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Stories from the Pandemic\u2019 is free to enter at the Millennium Gallery until Sunday 5 March.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Diverse experiences of the pandemic are being showcased at Sheffield&#8217;s Millennium gallery in an exhibition which opened on Friday night. \u201cStories from the Pandemic\u201d features endless tales of love, loss and solidarity which unfolded across the city during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
