{"id":43848,"date":"2023-02-20T11:39:35","date_gmt":"2023-02-20T11:39:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=43848"},"modified":"2023-02-20T11:39:38","modified_gmt":"2023-02-20T11:39:38","slug":"university-of-sheffield-students-union-marks-historic-lgbt-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/02\/20\/university-of-sheffield-students-union-marks-historic-lgbt-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Sheffield Students&#8217; Union marks historic LGBT+ anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A plaque to commemorate fifty-years of LGBT+ representation has been unveiled at the University of Sheffield Students&#8217; Union. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plaque was revealed in an event last Friday by Gerry Firkins, who was the Chair of the<a href=\"https:\/\/su.sheffield.ac.uk\/activities\/view\/lgbt-plus-committee\"> University\u2019s Gaysoc <\/a>from 1973 to 1975, and Jamie Shipp, the SU\u2019s LGBT+ part time Officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unveiling took place in Interval Bar in the Students\u2019 Union and was organised by Grace Clearly, the SU\u2019s Liberations Officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Firkins said: \u201cWhat I was concerned about, which started this whole process, was that I didn\u2019t want this to be forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plaque commemorates the passing of an historic motion that was debated at the SU, a motion which Mr Firkins spoke in favour of which was: &#8216;This house supports Gay Rights.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Mr Firkins, though, the 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary is threefold; the founding of Gaysoc, the passing of this motion and the first Gaysoc disco which he organised as chair of the society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: \u201cIt was thanks to Grace [Clearly] that this is all happening. She has been wonderful, she has been powerful, she\u2019s taken it and made it what it is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unveiling took place after a screened interview with Mr Firkins, where he spoke about his time at university and the formation of Gaysoc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_8363-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-43879\" width=\"419\" height=\"279\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Picture courtesy of Josh Thory-Rao &#8211; 50th Anniversary Gaysoc plaque<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Clearly said she was glad to have the opportunity to celebrate this anniversary. She added: \u201cWe wanted to plan as much as we could because Gerry was asking for so little. All he wanted was just for it not to be forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Firkins said: \u201cI really do wish Gaysoc all the best. And I\u2019ve reminded them that they need to come back in 50 years for the 100<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary. These are moments when you can take the measure of what you have done and what you have achieved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also an exhibition in the Information Commons at the University, which has the interview showing on silent, a curated book collection and various artefacts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will be running until the end of February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A plaque to commemorate fifty-years of LGBT+ representation has been unveiled at the University of Sheffield Students&#8217; Union.
