{"id":43819,"date":"2023-02-20T12:45:58","date_gmt":"2023-02-20T12:45:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=43819"},"modified":"2023-08-16T15:57:47","modified_gmt":"2023-08-16T14:57:47","slug":"anti-immigration-protesters-face-counter-demonstration-in-rotherham-hotel-housing-asylum-seekers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/02\/20\/anti-immigration-protesters-face-counter-demonstration-in-rotherham-hotel-housing-asylum-seekers\/","title":{"rendered":"Anti-immigration protesters face counter demonstration outside Rotherham hotel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Anti-immigration protesters were met with resistance from hundreds of activists outside a hotel in Rotherham housing asylum seekers on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of far-right organisations Patriotic Alternative and English Constitution Party gathered outside the Holiday Inn Express in Manvers, which is currently homing more than 100 asylum seekers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"649\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Capture-police4c-1024x649.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-43942\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Capture-police4c-1024x649.png 1024w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Capture-police4c-980x621.png 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Capture-police4c-480x304.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Police vans at the rear of the Holiday Inn Express<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Demonstrators from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SheffieldSUTR\/\">Stand up to Racism<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/people\/Sheffield-Unite-Against-Fascism\/100064687183609\/\">Unite Against Fascism<\/a> and Sheffield Trade Council turned up to oppose the far-right groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anti-racism protester, Rachel Harris, 43, said: &#8220;You only need to look back at history to know why it&#8217;s important to challenge groups like those.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve seen a lot divide in this country recently. There&#8217;s a lot racism and homophobia on the rise and it&#8217;s just going to get worse unless people stand up to it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the protesters travelled by coach from Sheffield to spread the message that Yorkshire does not tolerate hate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They chanted &#8220;From the Pennines to sea, Yorkshire will be fascist free!&#8221; while police escorted them away from the anti-immigration protesters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The counter protesters engaged in a number of other chants throughout the day, including: &#8221;Say it louder, say it clear. Refugees are welcome here&#8221; and &#8220;No borders, no nations. Stop deportation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this demonstration, young children inside the hotel were seen waving at the crowds and holding up posters with the words &#8216;Thank you.&#8217; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phil Ward, activist, 70, said: &#8220;I&#8217;m here because I&#8217;m an anti-racist and I think it&#8217;s really important to stand up to racism and combat both the fascists and the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Fascism can only be stopped by active opposition.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The protests lasted for approximately two hours, as police presence increased when bystanders shouted at the anti-racism protesters from across the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A group of anti-immigration protesters spilled into the hotel car park to challenge the counter demonstrators, resulting in an exchange of insults between the two sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ruby Midgley, 29, said: &#8220;I think everybody has the right to live safely and free of harm and injustice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re all citizens of planet earth, not a nation or a country so I believe we should make these people feel welcome.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-dp-ocp-square-thumb\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Capture-ruby-400x400.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-43941\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Two people were arrested during the protest, one of whom has been bailed pending further enquiry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anti-immigration protesters were met with resistance from hundreds of activists outside a hotel in Rotherham housing asylum seekers on Saturday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":107,"featured_media":43939,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[6,133],"tags":[9,338],"class_list":["post-43819","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-top-story","tag-sheffield","tag-south-yorkshire"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
