href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/12\/09\/homelessness-being-tackled-by-charities-during-sheffield-cathedrals-christmas-tree-festival\/\">Christmas Tree Week Festival<\/a> was a misunderstanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christian Climate Action Sheffield, the group responsible for the tree in question, decorated it with hand-made mock Shell logos and pound notes hanging from it, brandishing a &#8220;thank you&#8221; message from Shell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The message behind the decoration was designed to highlight the Church of England&#8217;s involvement in Shell&#8217;s fossil fuel investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sam Wakeling, who helped decorate the tree, said: &#8220;Over recent years, the Church of England has provided a lot of political value to a company that can\u2019t find that kind of value in any other way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The idea behind it was to not bombard people with facts and figures and, instead, show a light-hearted view of a heavy subject.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The group claims the Church of England&#8217;s decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofengland.org\/media-and-news\/news-releases\/shells-energy-transition-strategy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">support<\/a> Shell&#8217;s transition strategy in 2021 provides the energy company with unwarranted validity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The strategy has been widely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accr.org.au\/downloads\/2022_09_gci_shell_forecast_update.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">criticised<\/a> for its inability to enact real change in how the company operates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Wakeling added: \u201cFossil fuel companies can\u2019t be trusted to be acting in good faith over the climate crisis because they\u2019re fundamentally the ones causing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs campaigners and members of the Church of England, we don\u2019t accept what\u2019s being done in our name.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only a few minutes after the initial tweet, however, another announcement was made saying Sheffield Cathedral had taken the tree down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Sadly this gesture of gratitude way it was portrayed, we felt it may not have been appropriate for a community festival.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a discussion between both parties, the tree was then reinstated, with the Cathedral goals.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group welcomed this decision by the cathedral and sees it as a way forward for the Diocese of Sheffield to make its own climate commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Wakeling said: &#8220;We\u2019re really grateful as a Christian climate action group that the cathedral would reconsider the removal and join the
