{"id":42580,"date":"2022-12-02T12:16:00","date_gmt":"2022-12-02T12:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=42580"},"modified":"2022-12-02T12:18:45","modified_gmt":"2022-12-02T12:18:45","slug":"steelkings-stars-set-to-light-it-up-on-world-stage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/12\/02\/steelkings-stars-set-to-light-it-up-on-world-stage\/","title":{"rendered":"Steelkings stars set to light up the world stage"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Three players from Sheffield\u2019s para ice hockey team have been selected to represent Great Britain at this years <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/ice-hockey\/bangkok-2022\">C-Pool World Championships<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldsteelkings.co.uk\/\">Sheffield Steelkings<\/a> Bryan Hackworth, Gary Farmer and AJ Mead have travelled to Thailand to compete for the gold medal and promotion to the B-Pool division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/FB_IMG_1667847769958.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42585\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/FB_IMG_1667847769958.jpg 960w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/FB_IMG_1667847769958-480x320.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 960px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bryan Hackworth, Reidy&#8217;s Photos and Barcud Photography<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Steelkings sent a message of support to their players travelling with the rest of their international team mates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They said: &#8220;We are very proud of Bryan, Gary and AJ for their Great Britain selection for the upcoming World Para Ice Hockey Pool-C World Championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&nbsp;work really hard to get the very best out of our players and I am confident in their ability to do well at this tournament.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team are hopeful they can eventually become a A-Pool team and compete in the <a href=\"https:\/\/milanocortina2026.olympics.com\/\">2026 Winter Paralympics<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Net minder, Bryan Hackworth, 34, who has played the sport for 17 years, spoke of the camaraderie amongst the GB camp and how this will benefit them when gunning for gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cWe have trained more as a team so that we can just concentrate on this particular tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a good bunch of lads that we\u2019ve managed to get out there.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Para ice hockey is not funded at  government level meaning all for travel and tournament fees has to be paid for by the players. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-soundcloud wp-block-embed-soundcloud\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bryan Hackworth on Fundraising by User 891364086\" width=\"1080\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?visual=true&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F1394716432&#038;show_artwork=true&#038;maxheight=1000&#038;maxwidth=1080\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hackworth&#8217;s aunt, Linda Rowland, explained how her nephew created a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/bryan-get-to-ipc-para-ice-hockey-world-cup?qid=cdc575c74f7407f86b3899b8b93956e5\">GoFundMe page<\/a>, to finance the expenses he will incur through the tournament, and has currently raised \u00a31335.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cHe\u2019s a little bit short of the actual amount needed at the moment.
