{"id":42285,"date":"2022-11-28T15:01:39","date_gmt":"2022-11-28T15:01:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=42285"},"modified":"2022-11-28T15:01:42","modified_gmt":"2022-11-28T15:01:42","slug":"sheffields-gay-quarter-part-closes-and-has-late-licence-removed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/11\/28\/sheffields-gay-quarter-part-closes-and-has-late-licence-removed\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield&#8217;s Gay Quarter part closes and has late licence removed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">Queer Junction has been forced to close while their neighbour Dempsey&#8217;s has lost their late licence, as the two have been branded the &#8220;most crime ridden&#8221; in Sheffield.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After 22 years of being the hub of Sheffield&#8217;s gay scene, it was announced late on Thursday night that Sheffield Gay Quarter on  Hereford Street is fighting collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Yorkshire Police named the two venues as &#8220;the most crime ridden&#8221; in the city with the number of sexual and homophobic attacks peaking in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday. They were the only two locations in the city with a license to stay open till 6am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With over five percent of the Sheffield population <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/culturalidentity\/sexuality\/datasets\/sexualidentityuk\">estimated <\/a>to be LGBTQ+, there now remains only one nightclub tailored towards the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dempsey&#8217;s Bar and Club posted on their Facebook that the change in opening hours is &#8220;totally out of our control&#8221; to a large and mainly unhappy response from customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"509\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/316416232_612755387313908_6801179514048585418_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/316416232_612755387313908_6801179514048585418_n.jpg 509w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/316416232_612755387313908_6801179514048585418_n-480x679.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 509px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Posted on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DempseysSheffield\/\">Dempseys Facebook Page<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Labour MP for Sheffield Central <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/11\/25\/suella-braverman-international-students-refugees-blomfield-paul-sheffield-mp-directing-attention-away\/\">Paul Blomfield<\/a> said: &#8220;Dempsey&#8217;s has always played a really important role, certainly in the LGBTQ+ community, and it&#8217;s bad news. It&#8217;s simply shocking that in this day and age the community is still facing any kind of harassment.
