{"id":41912,"date":"2022-11-25T13:47:52","date_gmt":"2022-11-25T13:47:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=41912"},"modified":"2022-11-25T14:59:23","modified_gmt":"2022-11-25T14:59:23","slug":"__trashed-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/11\/25\/__trashed-6\/","title":{"rendered":"Businesses feel the cost-of-living crisis at Sheffield&#8217;s Christmas Market"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rising costs and shoppers&#8217; &#8220;focus on money&#8221; are having an impact on independent businesses at Sheffield&#8217;s Christmas market, according to traders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The market is back in the city centre this year with over 80% of the vendors being local traders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nina, a 22-year-old barista for Frazer\u2019s Coffee Roasters, said the crisis had impacted the business in other ways than just its sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She is the only person working on the stall and will lose her job when the market closes. The company, based in Neepsend simply cannot afford to continue employing her.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve never seen it as monstrously so as at the moment,\u201d she said about rising costs. \u201cEveryone is so focused on money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"598\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9037-min-2-1024x598.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41959\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9037-min-2-980x572.jpg 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9037-min-2-480x280.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Nina, a barista for Frazer&#8217;s Coffee Roasters<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She explained that Frazer\u2019s Coffee Roasters caf\u00e9 was shutting down as the landlord had increased the rent to double the amount they were already paying.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nina said that although she was not worried about getting another job, she was concerned about how it might last.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJobs are so contractual now. I grew up watching my parents go through the recession, and now I can see it happening again.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Helen Gilbert, from Meersbrook, Sheffield, sells her handmade jewellery and gifts. She thinks that while people are worrying a lot about money, it has not necessarily stopped them from buying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think people are tightening their belts a little, but where my items are on the lower end of the price range, people still find the time for the tradition of buying stocking fillers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"746\" src=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9036-min-min-1024x746.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42053\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9036-min-min-980x714.jpg 980w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9036-min-min-480x350.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Ferris wheel at Sheffield&#8217;s Christmas Market<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She has found that Fridays and Saturdays are busier than weekdays, which can be quiet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m lucky to have a supportive partner with a \u201cproper\u201d job, which means I can have a more artsy business,\u201d she said. \u201cOtherwise we might not be able to afford it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Angilina Dhami, a 20-year-old university student, paid \u00a37 for a vegetarian Yorkshire pudding wrap.
