{"id":41753,"date":"2022-11-25T15:52:09","date_gmt":"2022-11-25T15:52:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=41753"},"modified":"2022-11-25T17:00:58","modified_gmt":"2022-11-25T17:00:58","slug":"suella-braverman-international-students-refugees-blomfield-paul-sheffield-mp-directing-attention-away","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/11\/25\/suella-braverman-international-students-refugees-blomfield-paul-sheffield-mp-directing-attention-away\/","title":{"rendered":"Braverman is directing attention away from refugees and towards international students, says Sheffield Labour MP"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Home Secretary Suella Braverman plans to use international students as a diversion tactic from the growing refugee crisis, says Sheffield MP <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffieldwire.co.uk\/tag\/paul-blomfield\/\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Blomfield<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked by constituents about how he can use his power as a politician, the Labour MP for Sheffield Central said: &#8220;I want to support international students in Sheffield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Suella Braverman and the Home Office are directing attention away from refugees entering the country and are drawing attention to international students.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This comes as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/11\/25\/foreign-students-to-reportedly-be-barred-from-uk-unless-studying-at-top-universities.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/11\/25\/foreign-students-to-reportedly-be-barred-from-uk-unless-studying-at-top-universities.html\" target=\"_blank\">crackdown on international students<\/a> as an attempt to lower the numbers of immigrants coming to the UK. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government stated that international students will be <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/rishi-sunak-mulls-crackdown-on-foreign-students-to-reduce-immigration-12755125\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the main targets in<\/a> \u201cefforts to reduce immigration\u201d, especially those studying &#8220;low-quality&#8221; degrees and bringing dependents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Downing Street has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-63757889\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declined<\/a> to comment on the definition of what &#8220;low quality&#8221; is or to &#8220;pre-empt&#8221; any policy decisions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suella Braverman has previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/politics\/home-secretary-government-suella-braverman-politics-the-sun-b1031391.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> that international students &#8220;bring in family members who can piggyback onto their student visa&#8221; and &#8220;propping up, frankly, substandard courses in inadequate institutions&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Immigration statistics reach their <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/politics\/20531127\/record-rise-in-immigration-revealed\/\" target=\"_blank\">highest point since the Second World War<\/a>. An estimated 1.1 million people moved to the UK in the 12 months to June of this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Home Secretary Suella Braverman said: &#8220;We have welcomed hundreds of thousands of people to Britain this year following the devastating war in Ukraine, the evacuation from Afghanistan and the despicable crack down on democratic rights in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Therefore, it is understandable that we have seen a record number of people coming to our country thanks to the generosity of the British people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;But the public rightly expect us to control our borders and we remain committed to reducing migration over time in line with our manifesto commitment.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of international students granted visas to work in the UK rose to 476,000.
