{"id":40400,"date":"2022-05-04T12:38:48","date_gmt":"2022-05-04T11:38:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=40400"},"modified":"2022-05-04T12:38:48","modified_gmt":"2022-05-04T11:38:48","slug":"sunderland-ready-for-largest-ever-fan-led-display-in-play-offs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/05\/04\/sunderland-ready-for-largest-ever-fan-led-display-in-play-offs\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield Wednesday to face largest ever fan-led display in play-offs with Sunderland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Roker End of the Stadium of Light is set to be covered in a sea of red and white when Sheffield Wednesday visit Wearside for Friday\u2019s League One play-off semi-final.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Spirit of 37<\/em>, coined by its four organisers due to the block they sit in and in honour of the year of Sunderland\u2019s first FA Cup win, are responsible for the club\u2019s fan-led displays.<\/p>\n<p>Over \u00a33,000 has been raised so far by the group\u2019s fundraiser page over two days, smashing the original target of \u00a32,250.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were just trying to do whatever we could to build things back up and bring a depleted fanbase back on side to try and create something different in League One\u201d said organiser Michael Conroy, 44.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen results are going well it\u2019s easy to get volunteers, but when it\u2019s -3 degrees and everyone wants to be in the warm pub, numbers started dropping.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_40406\" style=\"width: 233px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40406\" class=\"wp-image-40406 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/awesome-shockley.77-68-72-77.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Sunderland-display-2--223x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"223\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-40406\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A previous Roker End display<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The group, which formed in 2018, have received hundreds of messages from volunteers in advance of Friday\u2019s huge encounter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe response from fans has been amazing, for just four daft lads who go to the matches, to raise this much,\u201d said Patrick Scott, 25.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe volunteers coming on Friday don\u2019t even know what the display is going to look like, but they love the club and want to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group have been working non-stop since the fixture was confirmed, combined with their full-time jobs, to prepare the display which in the past has included huge flags held above heads by fans and individual sections of material held up to form a bigger image.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spirit of 37 Sunderland\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vWUmMUEujpI?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Friday presents a huge opportunity for both ex-Premier League clubs to take a huge step in climbing back up the divisions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get this often in League One, but I think it will actually be a good game to watch as both teams try and play good football,\u201d Patrick said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWednesday have hit form at the right time, it\u2019s a shame that this won\u2019t be the final as Wembley would have been packed,&#8221; Michael added.<\/p>\n<p>All four agreed that Sunderland would need to take a lead into Monday\u2019s second leg at Hillsborough to have a chance of progressing.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Spirit of 37<\/em> also confirmed that they will plan an even bigger display for Wembley if the Black Cats progress to the final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Predictions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Patrick &#8211; 3-1, 1-0.
