There were marshals with the riders and at key junctions, and families rode at the front so that the children didn\u2019t get left behind.<\/p>\n<p>Sheffield&#8217;s Green Party members also showed up to support the event.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Fantastic to see so many people attending <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CycleSheffield?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CycleSheffield<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/space4cycling?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#space4cycling<\/a> big cycle ride today in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Sheffield?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Sheffield<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Green councillors, candidates and our fab Green mayoral candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GreenWhyman?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GreenWhyman<\/a> were there.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re committed to improving cycling, walking and public transport \ud83d\udeb2\ud83d\udeb6\u200d\u2640\ufe0f\ud83d\ude8c <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/D5AWzUt3Ht\">pic.twitter.com\/D5AWzUt3Ht<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Sheffield Green Party (@SheffieldGreens) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SheffieldGreens\/status\/1517886154615439362?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 23, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Ione MacGregor took part in the ride: \u201cI am conscious that in a city like Sheffield the road layout puts a lot of people off, so I think we need to get a lot of people cycling, and to do that they need to be confident to get on the roads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to make sure the town is designed in a way that everybody feels safe. Not only for themselves, but to encourage children, which I think is the most important thing going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked about the current state of cycling infrastructure, she said: \u201cI think there have been some interesting things that have happened. There has been the Greater Green section down by Kelham Island, but I also noticed that they put markets and things on that. It is almost like they give you a space then it\u2019s not really your space.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_39993\" style=\"width: 322px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39993\" class=\"wp-image-39993\" src=\"https:\/\/awesome-shockley.77-68-72-77.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"312\" height=\"234\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-39993\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some cyclists brought their children along in attached prams<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like \u2018Well you can have it until we want the space back then we\u2019re going to do something else with it.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is so much more that can be done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also thinks improving Ecclesall Road is \u201ccrucial\u201d to make it more safe for cyclists of all experience levels.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_39988\" style=\"width: 377px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39988\" class=\"wp-image-39988 \" src=\"https:\/\/awesome-shockley.77-68-72-77.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/278498152_1014235389476302_763274170524216588_n-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"367\" height=\"275\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-39988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The ride lasted for about an hour<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Comparing the cycling to London, she said: \u201cA lot of people say that is terrifying but actually the provisions down there are better. People are more used to seeing cyclists around which changes car drivers\u2019 behaviour, so I think once we start to get more cyclists on the roads everybody adapts.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Loved the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SpaceForCycling?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SpaceForCycling<\/a> ride organised by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CycleSheffield?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CycleSheffield<\/a> yesterday. Good vibes and a great turnout. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WnmO0Yuuep\">pic.twitter.com\/WnmO0Yuuep<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Joe Dreimann (@jdreimann) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jdreimann\/status\/1518192439454048257?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 24, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Nicole Erlen, 68, and her husband were also at the event: \u201cWhat exists at the moment is not good and there are some areas where I don\u2019t feel safe on my bike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just think it is a fabulous event. I think it is a good opportunity for cyclists to get together, for children to gain confidence on the roads, and people to gain confidence by being in big numbers because the cars have to give way to this big number of cyclists, and I think it demonstrates what happens if people feel more able to ride their bikes on Sheffield streets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She uses her bike as a form of transport to try and stop the spread of pollution, reduce the expense of running a car but predominantly to improve air quality in the city.<\/p>\n<p>Although the riders were there to raise awareness of the problematic road layouts, the event itself was received well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last Saturday, cyclists of all ages gathered to ride through Sheffield to encourage the council to improve road safety.
