{"id":39913,"date":"2022-04-25T13:38:28","date_gmt":"2022-04-25T12:38:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=39913"},"modified":"2022-04-25T13:38:28","modified_gmt":"2022-04-25T12:38:28","slug":"disability-pay-gap-nearly-doubled-in-yorkshire-and-the-humber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/04\/25\/disability-pay-gap-nearly-doubled-in-yorkshire-and-the-humber\/","title":{"rendered":"Disability pay gap nearly doubled in Yorkshire and the Humber"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The disability pay gap in Yorkshire and the Humber nearly doubled from 2020 to 2021, according to new data from the Office for National Statistics.<\/p>\n<p>The gap widened from 6.2% in 2020 to 10.7% in 2021, as people who reported having disabilities were paid on average \u00a31.37 less per hour.<\/p>\n<p>Sheffield-based recruitment company Tribepad conducted a survey and found 22.9% of people from Sheffield thought their disability would affect their chances of getting a new job or promotion.<\/p>\n<p>People whose daily activities were limited a lot by a long-term physical or mental health condition were also, on average, paid less than those who were limited slightly.<\/p>\n<p>The widest pay gap was found for people who listed autism as their main impairment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/9592470\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/9592470\"><\/div>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/9592470\"><\/div>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/9592470\">The overall disparity shrank from 12.6% in 2019 to 6.2% in 2020, but this effect has now been reversed.<\/div>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/9592470\"><\/div>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/9592470\">Controlling for occupation reduces the size of the pay gap but does not get rid of it entirely.<\/div>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/9592470\"><\/div>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/9592470\">This means disabled people would still be paid less for doing the same job as someone with no long-lasting health conditions.<\/div>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/9592470\"><\/div>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/9592470\">The pay gap was also at its widest among those in senior and management positions, while it was lowest in caring, leisure and service occupations.<\/div>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/9592470\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/9594105\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/9592470\"><\/div>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/9592470\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Trade Union Congress (TUC) General Secretary Frances O&#8217;Grady said:<\/span>\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cDisabled people deserve better.<\/span><\/div>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/9592470\"><\/div>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/9592470\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">&#8220;We need mandatory disability pay gap reporting to shine a light on poor workplace practices that fuel inequality at work.<\/span><\/div>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/9592470\"><\/div>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/9592470\">\u201cWithout this, millions of disabled workers will be consigned to years of lower pay and in-work poverty.\u201d<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The disability pay gap in Yorkshire and the Humber nearly doubled from 2020 to 2021, according to new data from the Office for National Statistics.
