{"id":38998,"date":"2022-03-21T12:01:30","date_gmt":"2022-03-21T12:01:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=38998"},"modified":"2022-03-21T12:01:30","modified_gmt":"2022-03-21T12:01:30","slug":"campaign-aiming-to-raise-40000-for-a-modified-trike-to-give-sheffield-amputee-his-freedom-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/03\/21\/campaign-aiming-to-raise-40000-for-a-modified-trike-to-give-sheffield-amputee-his-freedom-back\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Having the trike would be like having my legs back&#8217;: Fundraising campaign to buy Sheffield amputee hand-controlled trike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A campaign has been launched to raise \u00a340,000 to buy a modified motorbike for a life-long biker who lost both his legs in March last year.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Darren Rix had both legs amputated after he contracted Sepsis in March 2021.\u00a0<\/span>He also suffered a heart attack and kidney failure following the operation and was told he only had days to live.<\/p>\n<p>He has made a miraculous recovery since but he has largely spent it isolated at home.<\/p>\n<p>The organiser of the fundraiser, Steve Eyre 61, said: \u201cIt would be life changing for him to get this trike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery weekend he used to travel all over the country to all the big conventions. He&#8217;s gone from that to being, you know, a virtual prisoner in his own home. Having the trike would give him his freedom back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr Rix, from the Abbeydale area of the city, said: &#8220;I&#8217;ve been in the house for two years now and it&#8217;s been driving me mad. Having the trike would be like having my legs back. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It would bring me so much joy and I would be out in it all the time.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-39000\" src=\"https:\/\/awesome-shockley.77-68-72-77.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Darren-2-201x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Darren-2-201x300.jpeg 201w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Darren-2.jpeg 391w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Before the pandemic, Mr Rix would travel between comic book conventions and memorabilia events across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The modified trike would allow him to start getting around the country again.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fundraisers have been quoted \u00a340,000 by trike specialists, Trike Guys. Mr Eyre\u2019s company World of Superheroes would then cover all the running costs to keep Darren going.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr Eyre, from Mosborough, said: \u201cHe&#8217;s done so much over the years for different charities. He\u2019s always offered up different models to go to auction and he\u2019s helped so many people over his lifetime.
