{"id":38621,"date":"2022-03-14T13:59:47","date_gmt":"2022-03-14T13:59:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=38621"},"modified":"2022-03-14T13:59:47","modified_gmt":"2022-03-14T13:59:47","slug":"how-much-food-do-you-waste-sheffield-council-aims-to-combat-global-food-waste-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/03\/14\/how-much-food-do-you-waste-sheffield-council-aims-to-combat-global-food-waste-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield Food Waste: Council and charity join forces to set out strategy for collection service in the city"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new strategy for food waste collection service in Sheffield has been laid out by councillors and charity workers following the second national Food Waste Action Week.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffield.gov.uk\/home\">Sheffield City Council<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Recycle4Shef\">Recycle4Sheffield<\/a> have partnered up to join the campaign of reducing food waste, announcing plans for a government-led food collection service,<\/p>\n<p>The Food Waste Action Week is led by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lovefoodhatewaste.com\/\"> Love Food Hate Waste. <\/a>A member of the organisation, Sarah Clayton, said: \u201cIf global food waste were a country, it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases after China and the US.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/8971804\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Sources: BBC and UN<\/p>\n<p>Within the UK alone, the nation wastes 4.5 million tonnes of edible waste, which is enough to fill 90 Albert Halls.<\/p>\n<p>Sheffield Council have acted by announcing plans for a government-led food waste collection service, commencing in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Councillor for Crookes and Crosspool, <a href=\"https:\/\/democracy.sheffield.gov.uk\/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=20689\">Tim Huggan<\/a>, has led calls for a \u2018trial\u2019 Food Waste Service.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38627\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38627\" class=\"wp-image-38627 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/awesome-shockley.77-68-72-77.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Tim-Huggan-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Tim-Huggan-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Tim-Huggan.jpg 220w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-38627\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Councillor Tim Huggan<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He said: \u201cWe can use the trial to identify issues with the service to iron out glitches and basically get the city ready for the full roll-out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf people start separating their food waste and see how much they are wasting, they will soon reduce the amount of food waste they have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the past Coun. Huggan had made two proposals for a trial Food Waste Service at council which were rejected by the Labour and Green Party coalition. The expected 2023 rollout of the new food waste collection service in Sheffield has been made compulsory by the government.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All the evidence shows that if people start separating their food waste and see how much they are wasting, they soon start to reduce the amount of food waste that they have.&#8221; Coun.
