{"id":38610,"date":"2022-03-14T15:03:30","date_gmt":"2022-03-14T15:03:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=38610"},"modified":"2022-03-14T15:03:30","modified_gmt":"2022-03-14T15:03:30","slug":"knit-off-to-kick-off-rotherham-crocheting-5000-flowers-to-celebrate-womens-euro-2022-matches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/03\/14\/knit-off-to-kick-off-rotherham-crocheting-5000-flowers-to-celebrate-womens-euro-2022-matches\/","title":{"rendered":"Knit Off to Kick Off: Rotherham crocheting 5,000 flowers to celebrate Women&#8217;s EURO 2022 matches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A campaign has been launched to dress-up Rotherham this summer, as the town prepares to host matches for the Women&#8217;s EURO 2022 tournament.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel Stothard, 42, is in charge of overseeing fan experience across the matches, and is working on Knit Off to Kick Off alongside local crochet groups.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38692\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38692\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-38692\" src=\"https:\/\/awesome-shockley.77-68-72-77.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Rachel-Stothard-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-38692\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rachel Stothard, 42, will be overseeing fan experience across the tournament<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The target is to knit 5,000 crochet flowers to be wrapped around and hung from trees across the centre, to highlight the fact that Rotherham is 70% green.<\/p>\n<p>She said: &#8220;The response so far has been absolutely fantastic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve had really good engagement from our Knit and Natter groups within libraries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Stothard said the pandemic had forced some of the groups to stop, and hopes this campaign will give them a reason to get back out there.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38699\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38699\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-38699\" src=\"https:\/\/awesome-shockley.77-68-72-77.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Flower-knit-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-38699\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the designs to be crocheted by volunteers<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Knitters and crocheters can choose from four different flower patterns, with directions available on the Rotherham Town Centre website.<\/p>\n<p>Rotherham will host four matches across the Women&#8217;s EURO tournament, with three group stages and one quarter-final being held at the New York Stadium in July.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Stothard said: &#8220;We&#8217;re getting a lot of people visiting the town centre who have never been before, and it&#8217;s a really nice story for us to be able to tell.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The creations will be available to see for around two weeks over the summer.<\/p>\n<p>As an opportunity to give back, the council will be working with Sheffield and Hallam County FA to offer taster sessions to those who take part in a variety of activities such as Soccercise and Walking Football.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The sessions will also help some people to be a bit more active&#8221;, Ms Stothard said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38702\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38702\" class=\"wp-image-38702 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/awesome-shockley.77-68-72-77.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/UEFA-WomensEuros-Hero-1080x1080-Rotherham-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-38702\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The matches to be hosted in Rotherham.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The first group stage match in Rotherham between France and Italy will take place on 10 July.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A campaign has been launched to dress-up Rotherham this summer, as the town prepares to host matches for the Women&#8217;s EURO 2022 tournament.
