{"id":38348,"date":"2022-02-28T16:35:27","date_gmt":"2022-02-28T16:35:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=38348"},"modified":"2022-02-28T16:35:27","modified_gmt":"2022-02-28T16:35:27","slug":"you-call-someone-a-dog-they-act-like-a-dog-black-northern-women-host-sheffield-conference-to-encourage-equality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/02\/28\/you-call-someone-a-dog-they-act-like-a-dog-black-northern-women-host-sheffield-conference-to-encourage-equality\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cyou call someone a dog they act like a dog\u201d: Black Northern Women host Sheffield conference to support black women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate International Women\u2019s Day, Black Northern Women are hosting a conference to enable black women and their allies to connect with one another.<\/p>\n<p>The event will be taking place on the 5<sup>th<\/sup> March at Sheffield Hallam University.<\/p>\n<p>Black women and those who wish to support them are being encouraged to attend.<\/p>\n<p>The theme is \u201cbreak the bias\u201d which represents the struggle that many black women face in regards to discrimination and misogyny.<\/p>\n<p>Carol Stewart, 55, \u00a0the co-founder of Black Northern Women, spoke about how discrimination reduces the morale of black people.<\/p>\n<p>She told Sheffield Wire: \u201cyou call someone a dog they act like a dog.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38372\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38372\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-38372\" src=\"https:\/\/awesome-shockley.77-68-72-77.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Carol-Stewart-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Carol-Stewart-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Carol-Stewart.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-38372\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carol Stewart<\/p><\/div>\n<p>She grew up in Sheffield, and spoke about her own struggles with racism: \u201cMe and three of my white friends played this game and I always had to be the servant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol decided to be courageous and tell her story so that she could be a role model for her son.<\/p>\n<p>She is an award-winning coach for high-achieving women, and she is also the director of the coaching company Abounding Solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Carol is hoping that the conference, which will feature speakers, networking and panel discussions, will provide a \u201csense of sisterhood and connection\u201d for people who may have had similar experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Women who own black businesses will be given an opportunity to showcase their products.<\/p>\n<p>The keynote speaker\u00a0 will be award-winning comedian, actor, writer, director, presenter and producer Angie Le Mar.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38373\" style=\"width: 242px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38373\" class=\" wp-image-38373\" src=\"https:\/\/awesome-shockley.77-68-72-77.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Angie-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"232\" height=\"232\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-38373\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Angie Le Mar<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Angie, 56, spoke about her experiences starting out in the comedy industry: \u201cstand up comedy was a hard world because it was predominantly men.<\/p>\n<p>I remember being in a changing room and a man used the toilet in the basin and I thought \u2018what is this?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Angie said she&#8217;s excited to be speaking at the event as &#8220;it&#8217;s important to tell your story.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Carol sincerely hopes that the event will be sold out.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cIt would be fantastic.
