Residents told me when they go out and see groups of youngsters standing on the corner near the bushes they just walk away. The only reason they could have been there was for using drugs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey told me people don\u2019t feel comfortable using the park anymore because they feel intimidated and are worried that their children will get hurt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0OrU7yUfuTY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Used drug needles and paraphernalia have been found on pathways in the wooded areas of the park, some with blood on them.<\/p>\n<p>Local resident Shaheryar Chishty said: \u201cIt discourages people from bringing their families here, they don\u2019t feel safe or comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not right that we can\u2019t take our kids to play here without the fear that if we take our eyes off them for a second they could get hurt by these things.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38073\" style=\"width: 354px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38073\" class=\" wp-image-38073\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2022\/02\/Needle-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"344\" height=\"229\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-38073\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Used Needles found at the park<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The park is used by dog walkers and local families and became particularly important during the Covid-19 lockdowns when residents used it as an outdoor escape and to exercise.<\/p>\n<p>While the park has plenty of green space and a children\u2019s play area, the edges have become overgrown, and rubbish has also been dumped along several paths.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Chishty said: \u201cThe space has become a dumping ground. You want to go out for a walk but once it gets dark a different community comes out in this area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miss Basharat\u2019s petition asks for better lighting in the park to discourage drug use and make residents feel safer when using the park after dark.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38051\" style=\"width: 381px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38051\" class=\" wp-image-38051\" src=\"https:\/\/awesome-shockley.77-68-72-77.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Fly-tipping-found-300x247.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"371\" height=\"306\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-38051\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mount Pleasant Park<\/p><\/div>\n<p>She also hopes the park can become a safe space for the community that will help look after people\u2019s mental health.<\/p>\n<p>Miss Basharat, Labour\u2019s candidate for Nether Edge and Sharrow ward, said: \u201cOne of the beautiful things I found was the residents were happy to come and volunteer to keep this safe and beautify it with whatever they can do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just want the council to do their part to be able to continue making these places attractive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The petition has gained 200 signatures since being launched last week.<\/p>\n<p>Local residents can sign the petition by getting in touch with Miss Basharat at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nighat-basharat.co.uk\/\">About Nighat | My Site 1 (nighat-basharat.co.uk)<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Drug needles have been found in Mount Pleasant Park, sparking concerns for children\u2019s safety and prompting a Labour council candidate to launch a petition.
