{"id":37288,"date":"2022-02-21T13:30:20","date_gmt":"2022-02-21T13:30:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=37288"},"modified":"2022-02-21T13:30:20","modified_gmt":"2022-02-21T13:30:20","slug":"anger-at-authoritarian-measures-in-response-to-university-of-sheffield-building-occupation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/02\/21\/anger-at-authoritarian-measures-in-response-to-university-of-sheffield-building-occupation\/","title":{"rendered":"Anger at \u2018authoritarian\u2019 measures in response to University of Sheffield building occupation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Students aired their disgust over the weekend at &#8220;hostile&#8221; policy aimed at identifying protestors from the University of Sheffield after a university building was &#8220;occupied&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From 15 February to 18 February, students took over the Hicks building, protesting in solidarity with an ongoing national University and College Action (UCU) strike over &#8220;deteriorating pay&#8221; and working conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter account <em>Uni of Sheffield Rent Strike<\/em> coordinating the protests, claims students in the Hicks building were told they could only retrieve their items after providing valid identification and a signature.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today, Security are insisting occupiers provide ID, a description of the property and a signature.<\/p>\n<p>UoS are arguing that the property is \u201clost\u201d, when quite clearly the property inside could only belong to the occupiers, after Security have forced the closure of the building. 2\/3<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Uni of Sheffield Rent Strike (@rentstrikeUoS) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rentstrikeUoS\/status\/1494605569281433600?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 18, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Representatives from the University of Sheffield branch of the UCU told Sheffield Wire: \u201cThese actions by university management are aggressively punitive and hostile towards the students engaged in this occupation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decision to separate students from their property by locking a door was a deliberate one, and to treat it as \u201clost property\u201d and require students to provide ID to reclaim it is an overtly threatening move on the part of management.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was one of the five university buildings to be occupied throughout the week, along with the Diamond, Jessop West, Firth Court, and the Arts Tower.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37332\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37332\" class=\"size-dp-ocp-square-thumb wp-image-37332\" src=\"https:\/\/awesome-shockley.77-68-72-77.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/shef-court-400x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-37332\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">University of Sheffield Court order displayed outside the Hicks Building<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The occupation ended on Friday, after a court order of a possession hearing from the university was brought to the building.<\/p>\n<p>A protestor, who wished to remain anonymous, said: &#8220;We came from outside to see what was wrong. Students wanted to leave but their stuff was still locked in a lecture theatre.
