Though since the COVID pandemic began, people prefer shopping at home and this has affected the amount of money collected by buskers and charity performers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Clayton was one of the performers who were collecting money for Betel, a furniture company, to help the homeless on an annual basis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Charity Street Performer\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Bqfk-Kz-oI0?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Betel does this every year from 16 November up to Christmas. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When talking about whether COVID impacted how they collected money, Clayton said:\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the past we used to go inside supermarkets and indoors. We usually go to venues to perform, but there\u2019s been a couple of cancellations because they [the organisers] didn&#8217;t know which way the government was going.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added the government\u2019s coronavirus policy didn\u2019t restrict them from performing outside at Fargate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buskers, on the other hand, have to depend on the earnings from their street performances for their livelihood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20423 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/jus.shef.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/replacement-downing-st-imageii-300x127.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"508\" height=\"215\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Equity is a national union of more than 47,000 performers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dominic Bascombe, the Regional Official for their North East, Yorkshire and Humberside offices said: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur busker and street entertainer members could be affected by a downturn of traffic on the high street if fewer people decide to go into their physical office or place of work. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Street entertainers don&#8217;t have an option in terms of working from home, so they have continued to operate as best and as safely as they can.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLike other performers, they are typically self employed so did not feel the benefit of the Furlough scheme.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-20424 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/jus.shef.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Warm-Cream-Five-Star-Review-Social-Media-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"429\" height=\"429\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20422 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/jus.shef.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Dave-Webster-quote-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"239\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dave Webster, the National Organiser of Live Performance for Musicians Union (MU), said buskers &#8220;have been hard hit since COVID took hold, especially during the early lockdowns&#8221;. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The Union pushed back against Government policies and in some cases represented members when faced with police or local authority intervention. Obviously there is concern that this new variant could have a further detrimental effect \u2013 we will have to wait and see what the Government decides to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Webster said the union had been a big supporter of Busk in London (BiL) and its collaboration with Network Rail, which led to 60 musical performances at King\u2019s Cross Station. This was to welcome the passengers to railways after the COVID restrictions were lifted. These performances ran throughout August and around the first two weeks of September.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/l.instagram.com\/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fopen.spotify.com%2Falbum%2F3X1wg0i4Q96PpDQlcAw2BH%3Fsi%3DdmufO3GEThao6K2LxP2wig&amp;e=ATMw_nedlf3wid9KxUIh4b2fOaJJ025ZRiT0S5PYR6hpMvXWxGk4dQ16lj2dOvO3lDr8QCozJwAndhm-jKRdeZk&amp;s=1\">Giulia Marelli<\/a> is a busker who has worked with BiL in the past. When talking about her experience of working through the coronavirus, she said: \u201cLast year, when venues were still closed because of the social distance and the possibility to play outdoors, I ended up working a lot in markets such as Camden and Wembley.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20425 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/jus.shef.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Untitled-design-4-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe only request was to have a card reader to avoid handling cash and to keep social distances. It\u2019s still a requirement to have a card reader to play in train stations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When talking about the latest restrictions, she added: \u201cI feel the bigger issue is the absence of tourists, but from what I\u2019ve heard it\u2019s not the new restrictions the only problem but also because all the European tourists need a passport because of Brexit and they are less in any case even before the implementation of the quarantine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ms Marelli is not solely dependent on busking though, as she regularly performs at different venues in London. Because of this, she was able to claim a grant under the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/claim-a-grant-through-the-coronavirus-covid-19-self-employment-income-support-scheme\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-Employment Income Support Scheme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Sheffield busker Ian Whitehead does not believe that the government is supporting buskers through this tough time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\u201cSince when have they cared about us? They have been too busy planning a party down at No 10,\u201d he said, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">referencing the Christmas party scandal at Downing Street.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ian Whitehead - A Lucky Man (by The Verve) - Sheffield busker\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yR0jcLuoUU4?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr Whitehead has been a busker for the past 10 years, though he has only performed four times this year due to the anxiety induced by COVID.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He doesn\u2019t believe the new restrictions will have an impact on the busking earnings during Christmas, saying: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t think the government policies are really going to affect it because I still go out shopping, so buskers can still be seen performing in-person. The only changes are the requirement for masks and COVID passports for big venues.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr Webster from MU said after such hardship faced by buskers through this difficult period, the need \u201cto earn during the festive season is essential.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He talked about the possibility of buskers performing during COVID by \u201ctaking the necessary precautions, which can include the cashless system of making payments.
