{"id":36448,"date":"2021-12-10T14:13:06","date_gmt":"2021-12-10T14:13:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=36448"},"modified":"2021-12-10T14:13:06","modified_gmt":"2021-12-10T14:13:06","slug":"60000-sheffield-school-kids-take-part-in-festive-fitness-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/12\/10\/60000-sheffield-school-kids-take-part-in-festive-fitness-day\/","title":{"rendered":"60,000 Sheffield school kids take part in festive fitness day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Santa Dash to get kids &#8220;happy, healthy and passionate&#8221; had pupils from <\/span>more than 50 schools exercising in Sheffield today.<\/p>\n<p>The event, organised by School Games and The Arches School Sport Partnership, encourages children to get moving through festive fun, as well as raising money for charity.<\/p>\n<p>Adam Fuller, School Games Organiser, said: &#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sport isn\u2019t for everyone and there will be a percentage of kids who don\u2019t want to engage in team sports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;What we want to do is make children understand the importance of being active and we can deliver that message whilst having fun.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The schools involved have organised Christmas based activities to get pupils moving such as &#8216;snowball&#8217; fights, festive Just Dance and Santa Searches where kids must find Santas hidden around the school.<\/p>\n<p>David Millns, P.E. teacher at Westways Primary School, said: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou&#8217;ve got to touch every child\u2019s imagination really. Spark some interest and enthusiasm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you create the next Olympian that&#8217;s amazing but that&#8217;s not really the aim. Mr Millns added: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cActive kids are healthier kids. They can concentra<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">te better and work better in classrooms.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Westways have also combined the event with fundraising for Sheffield Children&#8217;s Hospital and are hoping to smash their target of \u00a3600.<\/p>\n<p>The school is just one of 50 in Sheffield taking part in the national event.<\/p>\n<p>Nick Wells, Head of PE at Beck Primary School, said: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s lovely that it&#8217;s national. But for me I just like the idea of making activity and exercise fun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;For me and for our kids it&#8217;s more important that we\u2019re doing something with a funny and exciting twist. I think there will be more children engaged than ever.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>60,000 children across Sheffield will be taking part in the event, which is just one part of School Games&#8217; mission to encourage exercise amongst children.
