{"id":36382,"date":"2021-12-10T11:41:51","date_gmt":"2021-12-10T11:41:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=36382"},"modified":"2021-12-10T11:41:51","modified_gmt":"2021-12-10T11:41:51","slug":"new-safety-equipment-at-crookes-valley-park-a-massive-step-forward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/12\/10\/new-safety-equipment-at-crookes-valley-park-a-massive-step-forward\/","title":{"rendered":"New safety equipment at Crookes Valley Park a &#8220;massive step forward&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New safety equipment at Crookes Valley Park has been labelled a &#8220;massive step forward&#8221; in an effort to prevent drownings in the park&#8217;s pond.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Safety Equipment Installed at Crookes Valley Park\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1yUqbJEQEsA?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The new safety measures come after a man in his 20s tragically drowned there in July.<\/p>\n<p>Local swimming enthusiasts welcome the measures, which will help less experienced swimmers stay safe.<\/p>\n<p>Suzie Wheway, 40, <span style=\"color: #666666; font-size: 14px;\">an outdoor swim coa<\/span><span style=\"color: #666666; font-size: 14px;\">ch in the Peak District, said: &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having that rescue equipment there is a big step forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;They\u2019re acknowledging that people are going in and doing something positive to try and support it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the summer, many use the pond to cool down, but taking a dip without knowing how to keep safe can lead to fatal outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Wheway said: &#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For about 40 years we\u2019ve been told swimming is really dangerous. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, everybody\u2019s lost the basic skills and understanding of how to assess water and water safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People are<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so scared to even tal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">k about swimming that they don\u2019t do any positive education on it. It\u2019s negligence by these organisations that they\u2019re missing the opportunity to actually prevent harm<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_36407\" style=\"width: 437px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36407\" class=\"wp-image-36407\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2021\/12\/PXL_20211209_145814563-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"320\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-36407\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reach poles and throw lines were installed on Tuesday to prevent drownings in the area.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Jo Tomalin, 65, a regular swimmer at Crookes Valley Park with four and a half years experience, said: &#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don&#8217;t jump in, walk in slowly, get your breath before you try to swim and don&#8217;t get out your depth.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If done correctly, wild swimming is not only safe but good for your health. It can <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/sms.12060\">reduce stress hormones<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/10751106\/\">increase dopamine levels and provide pain relief.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mrs Wheway said: \u201cIt&#8217;s a massive escape from the business of everyday life. I get complete and utter immersion in nature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;There&#8217;s all kind of evidence of positive mental health benefits.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Installed by South Yorkshire Fire Service, the equipment will make the park safer for all.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It acknowledges that people swim and keeps people safe.
