
{"id":36367,"date":"2021-12-10T14:43:31","date_gmt":"2021-12-10T14:43:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=36367"},"modified":"2021-12-10T14:43:31","modified_gmt":"2021-12-10T14:43:31","slug":"charities-brace-for-christmas-and-covid-dog-abandonment-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/12\/10\/charities-brace-for-christmas-and-covid-dog-abandonment-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"Charities brace for Christmas and COVID dog abandonment crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a cold winter\u2019s night in 2013, Ian Courtney\u2019s life was changed forever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His girlfriend at the time was on duty as a police officer when she heard scratching and whining coming from a box left at the side of the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon investigating, she found an abandoned 11-week-old female Jack Russell puppy inside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She made the decision to take the puppy to her and Ian&#8217;s home in Newcastle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite much searching for missing flyers and any contacts in the area, nobody came forward to claim her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The couple then made the decision to keep the pup, who they named Daisy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was not something Ian, 39, had planned for.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_36603\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36603\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-36603\" src=\"https:\/\/awesome-shockley.77-68-72-77.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_3243-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-36603\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ian Courtney, owner of Daisy and Sophia<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI didn\u2019t have time for a dog\u201d he said, but it became clear straight away just how special this little one was.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said: \u201cI was smitten right from the get go.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_36675\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36675\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-36675\" src=\"https:\/\/awesome-shockley.77-68-72-77.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Daisy-300x243.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"243\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-36675\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daisy<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daisy is now eight and a half, and lives life to her fullest alongside Ian and her sister Sophia, a seven and half year old mixed breed who was also rescued from Romania.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ian is a firm advocate of adopt, don\u2019t stop, and says that his two dogs are his whole life.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_36679\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36679\" class=\"wp-image-36679 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/awesome-shockley.77-68-72-77.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Sophia-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-36679\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sophia<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Struggling to imagine how he could ever give up his beloved dogs, he said: \u201cI\u2019m sure there are a number of cases where people have very good reasons, but there is a difference between dropping a dog off at a shelter and leaving a dog behind.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Don\u2019t be too proud&#8217;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dog abandonment over the festive period is a problem the RSPCA is bracing for as it launches its \u2018Join the Christmas Rescue\u2019 appeal this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet ownership hit new heights as a result of the pandemic, with estimates of more than 3.2m people taking on new pets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, as abandonment has risen by 20% this year compared to 2020, the charity fears a surge of pets left behind as people return to normal life following lockdown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Gift | RSPCA | Christmas Ad 2021\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6lRnlvS36Cc?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dermot Murphy, who is in charge of the charity&#8217;s frontline rescue teams, urged the public to do the right thing if they can no longer care for an animal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPlease never abandon a pet. Don\u2019t be too proud to ask for help.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In December 2020, the RSPCA received 51,815 calls, with 770 on Christmas Day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many experts in pet rehabilitation and rehoming say that situations like those of Daisy and Sophia can be easily avoided.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleo Wiltshire, 28, from Cambridge is a volunteer dog rescuer and trainer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studying a degree in Canine Behaviour, Practice and Management at the British College of Canine Studies, she says: \u201cThere are so many problems with how dogs end up in rescue and it starts even before their born.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From her experience, she believes a huge part of the problem is unregulated family breeders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said: \u201cThere are so many people who think they should just be able to breed their pets, with no health or temperament testing, no idea how to whelp a litter (help the mother give birth) or look after a mother in pregnancy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is situations like this, a lack of understanding of dogs and poor training which leads to so many pets being handed over to rescues, she believes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s people breeding dogs with no idea, it\u2019s people buying dogs with no idea and the worst part about this is the first two years of a dog\u2019s life is so unbelievably important.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;People need to be regulated&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleo is active across many dog rescue Facebook pages and does training with various adopters and with people that run rescue centres.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She finds that most often, dogs termed \u2018aggressive\u2019 are actually not that at all, but are simply uncomfortable in their surroundings, confused and scared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the animal sector itself is not regulated, no formal training is required in order to set up as a rescuer or trainer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is something Cleo feels needs to be changed, with the activity of backyard breeders causing so many issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople do need to be regulated, whether they are rescues are not.
