All of ours come from Morocco and they\u2019re sustainable from local co-operatives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sheffield Christmas market attracts thousands of people each year but many believe they should be more eco-friendly in a less damaging way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some are asking for radical action and follow in other countries\u2019 footsteps to do their part in saving the planet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Christmas Markets Vox Pop by User 163509873\" width=\"1080\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?visual=true&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F1171269040&#038;show_artwork=true&#038;maxheight=1000&#038;maxwidth=1080\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leading figures across the world have called for people to be greener and lead a more environmentally friendly lifestyle in the hope to stop climate change, which leads to the question of the level of waste generated across UK households.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mrs El Menyiy said: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFour years ago Morocco made bio-degradable bags, with a complete ban on plastic bags for the whole country. We use them now. It would be helpful for everybody if we could at least do that in this country it\u2019s not a difficult thing but as far as the attraction as a trader we are in it to earn money.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Just how much waste does the UK produce?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each year the UK spends \u00a325 billion on Christmas presents and \u00a342 million of unwanted gifts are thrown out in landfill. This contributes greatly to the 365.1 million metric tons (approx.) of CO2 emitted by the UK every year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/1002246\/UK_stats_on_waste_statistical_notice_July2021_accessible_FINAL.pdf\">Waste Data Flow<\/a>, in 2019 England has only increased their recycling of waste from households by 4% since 2010. Neighbouring countries such as Northern Ireland has surpassed England over the last 10 years with an increase of 13%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the recycling rate for waste from households increased in all UK countries in 2019, England is starting to slowly fall behind. The recycling rate for England was 45.5%, compared with 50.6% in Northern Ireland, 44.9% in Scotland, and 56.4% in Wales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-36138 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/awesome-shockley.77-68-72-77.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/graph-300x234.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"359\" \/> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Where does Sheffield stand?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Groups across South Yorkshire run events including the \u2018Alternative Christmas<\/span>\u00a0Markets\u2019 in a bid to make people more conscious of their spending decisions this year. The markets showcase crafters who use recycled and upcycled materials to create gifts in a way to help the planet.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Climate Alliance said: \u201cWe know that a lot of people have a strong emotional attachment to Christmas, which is why we don&#8217;t want to be Scrooge and tell everyone to stop celebrating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInstead, we want people to switch to more sustainable habits such as buying less, wastin<\/span>g less and shopping second hand. We want to show that it is possible to have an eco-friendly Christmas and create some new Christmas traditions.<b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-36144 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/awesome-shockley.77-68-72-77.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/chloe-article-4-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"494\" height=\"329\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CREDIT: <b>Maddy Winters \/ Against the Grain Photography<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe want to demonstrate that you can have a sustainable Christmas by buying less, buying recycled and upcycled gifts, and by making your own decor and gifts (or buying nothing, and focusing on spending quality time with loved ones instead).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe always aim to<\/span>\u00a0be as low waste as possible through using sustainable materials and being conscious of what we buy throughout the course of our project. Try an alternative such as newspaper, old parcel paper or upcycle old boxes and decorate delivery boxes with the children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you can afford recyclable paper don\u2019t forget look up techniques on wrappin<\/span>g presents without sticky tape.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decorate old wine glasses into snowmen and reindeers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuse last year\u2019s Christmas cards as tags.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid buying boxes of chocolates, they have a lot of unnecessary packaging. Why not bake<\/span> chocolates with the family?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visit the local charity shops for decorations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charities such as \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/friendsoftheearth.uk\/about\/21-ecofriendly-christmas-tips\">Friends of the Earth\u2019<\/a> offer support and guidance from COVID-safe community celebrations to gifts that are good for the planet.
