{"id":36088,"date":"2021-12-03T15:40:15","date_gmt":"2021-12-03T15:40:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=36088"},"modified":"2021-12-03T15:40:15","modified_gmt":"2021-12-03T15:40:15","slug":"sheffield-childrens-hospital-opens-newly-refurbished-cancer-ward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/12\/03\/sheffield-childrens-hospital-opens-newly-refurbished-cancer-ward\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield Children\u2019s Hospital opens newly refurbished cancer ward"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a community fundraising effort, Sheffield Children\u2019s Hospital has opened a newly refurbished \u00a32.75m cancer and leukaemia ward.<\/p>\n<p>Ward 6 officially opened yesterday and was funded by community sources ranging from individual benefactors to the Bears of Sheffield trail.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the hospital said: \u201cThe new ward is bigger and brighter, with improved spaces for parents to stay with their children and a dedicated playroom at the heart of the ward for everyone to enjoy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new bedrooms have a view of Weston Park, brand new televisions and new furniture to help patients feel more at home.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We have some amazing news \u2013 we\u2019ve now moved on to the new Ward 6!<\/p>\n<p>Patients, families and staff at Sheffield Children\u2019s have now officially moved into our newly refurbished cancer and leukaemia ward (Ward 6)! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/g8FNPlRGl6\">pic.twitter.com\/g8FNPlRGl6<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Sheffield Children&#8217;s (@SheffChildrens) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SheffChildrens\/status\/1466416432758022171?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 2, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Maya, a two-year-old leukaemia patient, has settled in well to her new surroundings on Ward 6.<\/p>\n<p>Her parents said: \u201cThe rooms are great; we love that they have en suite bathrooms and their own fridges which mean we don\u2019t have to leave Maya. The TV is also a big hit \u2013 it helps Maya feel like she\u2019s at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new ward provides treatment for cancer and blood disorders from babies through to 19-year-olds across South Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire. It also sees patients from across the country for chemotherapy operations and bone marrow transplants.<\/p>\n<p>Emily, a nurse on ward 6, said the new setup makes her work a lot more efficient.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cThe new ward is a better setting for the children and their parents, and is more functional for colleagues.
