{"id":34235,"date":"2021-05-07T18:15:06","date_gmt":"2021-05-07T17:15:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=34235"},"modified":"2021-05-07T18:15:06","modified_gmt":"2021-05-07T17:15:06","slug":"football-for-foodbanks-popular-sheffield-charity-to-expand-to-manchester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/05\/07\/football-for-foodbanks-popular-sheffield-charity-to-expand-to-manchester\/","title":{"rendered":"Football for Foodbanks: popular Sheffield charity to expand to Manchester"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A Sheffield charity has announced that it will be expanding to Manchester later this month &#8211; less than a year after it was founded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Football for Foodbanks launched in August 2020 after founder Matty Cassell noticed an increase in people wanting to play football again after the U.K\u2019s first national lockdown.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It&#39;s coming. 6pm today. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gzjnwdlNJL\">pic.twitter.com\/gzjnwdlNJL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Football For Foodbanks CIC (@FootballForFood) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FootballForFood\/status\/1390531000590028802?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 7, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The charity rents football pitches across Sheffield to ensure matches are as accessible as possible. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Players are charged an affordable extra fee compared to the cost of renting the pitch with the extra proceeds going to a local foodbank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For example, if a pitch would usually cost \u00a330 for an hour 5-a-side game, and 10 people are playing, the usual cost would be \u00a33 each.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Football for Foodbanks instead charges each player \u00a34, meaning a quarter of the money would go to those that need it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Last month, the money raised was enough to supply families around Sheffield with 450kgs of food &#8211; the equivalent to 90 bags of shopping.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Tom Moore, who will head up the new Manchester division said: \u201cSince turning up for a kick-about to get fit post lockdown, I\u2019ve seen Football for Foodbanks grow into a cracking little community of players and volunteers from all over Sheffield.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMoving over to Manchester has given me the opportunity to continue that good work across the Pennines. I\u2019m massively excited to share an initiative that has given me such a huge boost, to try and help bring communities closer together as we ease out of lockdown.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Despite launching in the shadow of lockdown, Sheffield\u2019s Football for Foodbanks has experienced a huge increase in the number of people signing up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After starting with just a handful of teams, there are now over 300 players in the men\u2019s division with a new women and gender minorities league being launched to widen participation even further.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Alice Rhind Tutt, who runs the women and gender minorities division said: \u201cWe had a lot of people signing up after lockdown saying they were looking for something new to try.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cPeople are looking for somewhere to exercise but also socialise. That\u2019s something we\u2019ve all missed out on massively over the last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI think especially in terms of casual football matches there\u2019s not a lot of opportunities to go and have a kick about. A lot of it seems to either be leagues or expensive. Most places expect a lot of commitment, for example playing every Wednesday at 6pm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cA lot of adults just can\u2019t manage that. Especially if they\u2019re a parent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Football for Foodbanks instead provides a barrier-free alternative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Each week the charity posts upcoming games in its Facebook group, with members simply having to comment \u201cin\u201d to secure a place in an upcoming game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Football for Foodbanks\u2019 Manchester division\u2019s first game will take place on 20th May.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sheffield\u2019s Football For Foodbanks will also be playing on the same day at Sheffield High School for Girls, with proceeds going towards tackling period poverty in the local area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Alice Rhind Tutt said: \u201cAside from food donations it\u2019s also important to point out that Foodbanks accept hygiene products.
