{"id":33531,"date":"2021-05-04T14:13:56","date_gmt":"2021-05-04T13:13:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=33531"},"modified":"2021-05-04T14:13:56","modified_gmt":"2021-05-04T13:13:56","slug":"sheffield-doctors-life-threatening-crash-reveals-the-dangers-of-cycling-the-outdoor-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/05\/04\/sheffield-doctors-life-threatening-crash-reveals-the-dangers-of-cycling-the-outdoor-city\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield doctor\u2019s life-threatening crash reveals the dangers of cycling the outdoor city\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Sheffield doctor\u2019s life-threatening crash on his commute from the Northern General Hospital has exposed the dangers of cycling in the &#8220;outdoor city&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr James Meiring was cycling to his home off Ecclesall Road when he was involved in a collision with a delivery van which could have been fatal.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The father-of-three, who has been caring for COVID patients since March 2020, suffered six fractured ribs and a collapsed lung in the crash on Burngreave Road on 6 April.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI went straight into the flat side of the van with my shoulder and my back, so it was kind of just a flat impact, then I slumped to the floor,\u201d said Dr Meiring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt first I thought I hadn\u2019t broken anything, but then I developed serious levels of pain in my chest where I\u2019d hit the van, and I couldn\u2019t breathe very well, so I called an ambulance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Meiring spent three nights in hospital and is now recovering at home, having been signed off work for four weeks due to his terrifying ordeal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The accident has sparked a commotion online, with a fellow doctor starting a petition for a safe cycle lane connecting the Northern General and the city centre.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheffielders flocked to social media to support the petition, which has over 1,300 signatures so far, but it seems the Northern General area might be the tip of the iceberg, as users recalled their own cycling crashes and near misses all over the city.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blockquote%20class=twitter-tweetp%20lang=en%20dir=ltrIt\u2019s%20city%20wide,%20not%20just%20travel%20to%20NGH.%20Rode%20into%20town%20for%20the%20first%20time%20in%206%20months%20last%20week.%20Eccy%20Rd%20is%20so%20dangerous%20when%20no%20bus%20lane,%20even%20with%20bus%20lane%20I%20would%20not%20take%20the%20kids.%20So%20now%20we\u2019d%20only%20go%20to%20town%20as%20a%20family%20in%20a%20car,%20if%20we\u2019d%20ever%20go%20to%20town%20now.%20Such%20a%20shame\/p\u2014%20Jack%20Kirby%20(@Jack_Kirby)%20a%20href=https:\/\/twitter.com\/Jack_Kirby\/status\/1387302965942394881?ref_src=twsrc%5EtfwApril%2028,%202021\/a\/blockquote%20script%20async%20src=https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js%20charset=utf-8\/script\">http:\/\/<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">It\u2019s city wide, not just travel to NGH.
