{"id":30949,"date":"2021-03-08T15:26:29","date_gmt":"2021-03-08T15:26:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=30949"},"modified":"2021-03-08T15:26:29","modified_gmt":"2021-03-08T15:26:29","slug":"nhs-1-pay-rise-is-a-kick-in-the-teeth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/03\/08\/nhs-1-pay-rise-is-a-kick-in-the-teeth\/","title":{"rendered":"NHS 1% pay rise is a \u2018kick in the teeth\u2019 for health care workers &#8211; Paul Blomfield speaks out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Sheffield Central MP has criticised the government for breaking faith with NHS staff following their proposed one per cent pay rise after originally promising a 2.1 per cent increase.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>MP Paul Blomfield, who has actively denounced the cuts to the NHS outlined in the budget, spoke of the need to reward NHS staff for their efforts during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cThe government plans are actually going back on what was an already meagre 2.1 per cent increase to which they had already legally committed, which is frankly extraordinary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think their hypocrisy of calling for the nation to applaud health workers and then kicking them in the teeth in this way is shocking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Blomfield is not alone in criticising the proposal. Amongst others, London Mayor Sadiq Kahn took to Twitter to brand the pay rise, which works out at around \u00a33.50 a week extra for an experienced nurse, an insult.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u00a33.50 a week is an insult.<\/p>\n<p>After all the clapping and all the praise, our NHS staff deserve more than this.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan (@MayorofLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MayorofLondon\/status\/1367839469618028547?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 5, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, Downing Street have defended the action, saying they have proposed what they consider to be an affordable plan given the economic burden of the pandemic on the country, while still ensuring that the NHS are not included in the planned public sector pay freeze.<\/p>\n<p>The Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, said in a briefing: \u201cI think it is fair to take into account all the considerations, the incredible hard work of those in the NHS, which means that they are not part of the overall public sector pay freeze, and also what\u2019s affordable as a nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The public service union, Unison, has also condemned the pay rise and is calling for the public to show their support of the NHS through a slow clap on Thursday.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NHSpay?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NHSpay<\/a> next steps:<br \/>\ud83d\udcaaStand up &#8211; doorsteps and balcony protest next Thursday (11 March) at 8pm<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udce2 Invite &#8211; friends and family &#8211; get every street involved<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xd6t1ZuuTR\">https:\/\/t.co\/xd6t1ZuuTR<\/a><br \/>1\/3<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; UNISON Health (@UNISONOurNHS) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UNISONOurNHS\/status\/1367839779434401797?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 5, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In a press release on Friday, Unison\u2019s General secretary, Christina McAnea said:\u00a0\u201cMillions stood on doorsteps and clapped for health staff who\u2019ve given their all. Let\u2019s now stand up for their right to fair wages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive the chancellor a slow hand clap for his miserly one per cent.
