Credit: Lydia Kerin<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After a relentless &#8216;Naked Threat&#8217; campaign headed by Refuge, the UK government announced it would amend the Domestic Abuse Bill to explicitly criminalise the threat to share sexual photos or films without consent.<\/p>\n<p>The bill will become law later this year and the crime will be punishable by up to two years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement has been celebrated as a big win for predominantly \u2013 though not exclusively \u2013 women in the digital age.<\/p>\n<p>It will protect the 1 in 7 young women (aged 18-34) who Refuge\u2019s research identified as experiencing this form of abusive control and will provide them with the much-needed legal support which is currently lacking.<\/p>\n<p>Threats to share intimate images or videos can have disastrous effects on mental health and emotional wellbeing, causing feelings of fear, anxiety, isolation.<\/p>\n<p>83% of women from Refuge\u2019s research said the threats themselves impacted their mental health or made them feel ashamed or frightened, with over 1 in 10 feeling suicidal.<\/p>\n<p>When discussing Refuge\u2019s campaign, Love Island Star and victim of this abuse, Zara McDermott, on BBC Women\u2019s Hour likened the threat to share as being \u2018held hostage to these images\u2019.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">&#8216;So many women are held hostage by these images.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Influencer Zara McDermott and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NickyMorgan01?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NickyMorgan01<\/a> joined us discuss the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RefugeCharity?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RefugeCharity<\/a> campaign to get threats to share intimate images made a criminal offence <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2TXZjWwZeg\">https:\/\/t.co\/2TXZjWwZeg<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zCPlAyglYS\">pic.twitter.com\/zCPlAyglYS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 BBC Woman&#8217;s Hour (@BBCWomansHour) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BBCWomansHour\/status\/1366085507181015041?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 28, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blockquote%20class=twitter-tweetp%20lang=en%20dir=ltr'So%20many%20women%20are%20held%20hostage%20by%20these%20images.'brbrInfluencer%20Zara%20McDermott%20and%20a%20href=https:\/\/twitter.com\/NickyMorgan01?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw@NickyMorgan01\/a%20joined%20us%20discuss%20the%20a%20href=https:\/\/twitter.com\/RefugeCharity?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw@RefugeCharity\/a%20campaign%20to%20get%20threats%20to%20share%20intimate%20images%20made%20a%20criminal%20offence%20a%20href=https:\/\/t.co\/2TXZjWwZeghttps:\/\/t.co\/2TXZjWwZeg\/a%20a%20href=https:\/\/t.co\/zCPlAyglYSpic.twitter.com\/zCPlAyglYS\/a\/p\u2014%20BBC%20Woman's%20Hour%20(@BBCWomansHour)%20a%20href=https:\/\/twitter.com\/BBCWomansHour\/status\/1366085507181015041?ref_src=twsrc%5EtfwFebruary%2028,%202021\/a\/blockquote%20script%20async%20src=https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js%20charset=utf-8\/script\"><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This comparison was also echoed by survivor Laura*, 23, receptionist, from Manchester, who said her ex-boyfriend\u2019s threat to share her intimate images made it \u2018so hard to leave\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>She remained \u2018trapped\u2019 in an abusive relationship for over three years because of the power he exerted over her. She said: \u201cI realised it wasn\u2019t about sex for him, it was about control and power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-34387 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/awesome-shockley.77-68-72-77.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/crop-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"292\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is important to note this is often the case; Refuge found of those women who experienced threats to share, 72% were threatened by a current or former partner.<\/p>\n<p>Of these women, 83% also experienced other forms of abuse, demonstrating how threats rarely occur in isolation and often form part of a wider pattern of control.<\/p>\n<p>The new legislation will therefore afford victims protection before they experience the trauma of having their intimate photo\/video shared.<\/p>\n<p>Significantly, it defines these victims as victims in law. It will raise awareness of the myriad of ways domestic abuse can manifest, remove existing societal stigma and validate the abuse suffered which is not always strictly violent.<\/p>\n<p>There is still much work to be done. A continued emphasis on prevention and protection is needed, along with a cultural shift in the understanding and acceptance of sexting and the sharing of intimate photographs between partners to ensure this law has its full impact.<\/p>\n<p>Both as a result of a lack of legal protection and the cultural taboo surrounding such images, few men or women report the threat of sharing to the police. Refuge found of those who did, less than 14% felt they received a good response.<\/p>\n<p>In light of the announcement, Refuge now wants social media companies to create more robust systems to report illegal threats made on their platforms and take action, meaning an increase in prosecutions against perpetrators.<\/p>\n<p>We have much further to go, but acknowledging progress in the women\u2019s movement can be encouraging.
